I don't don't care for surround sound. Stereo sounds best to me. I want a stereo receiver. who knows about them? are any digital? whats a good brand? I want to find a good price, but without sacrificing quality. any suggestions? I looked at Sony,Onkyo,Denon- Sony is $150 Onkyo is 200-300 and Denon300-400. I read Onkyo had oversized "guts"; does that translate to anything?

Basically go out and listen to them. Find one you like and go with it. The companies you listed are all quality products.

OK, it might take you a little while, but you can put together an old Adcom system together for cheap that'll blow away just about any AVR out there...
Go to ebay and look for an Adcom GFP-565 or GFP-555... These are a preamps - you can't come anywhere near the 565 for the price (it''ll run $100-$150) and the 555 is pretty good, too ($40-$80)
Next look for an Adcom power amp; GFA-565 monoblocks are out of your range, but a GFA-555 is about $300, and the GFA-545 usually goes for under $200. The 555 has tons of power and ever the 545 should give you more than any of the AVR's you're looking at. These are near-audiophile components and while they're a little older, they're really reliable and Adcom customer service is great.Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19
Gallo Ref AV, Frankengallo Ref 3, LC60i : Bryston 9b SST : Meridian 565

Adrien,
Sounds like you are on a tight budget of $400 or less and only interested in two channel. If you can live without a tuner (on a receiver) then I would go with an integrated amp (save money on interconnects). Check out Cambridge Audio:

Another integrated I like is the Audio Refinement Complete. New cost is like a grand but you can find them used on Audiogon for close to $500. I know that might be more than you want to spend though. If your budget will allow $500 - $700 then there are some used tube gear options (Jolida and others) you can start to get into if you have some fairly efficient speakers.

Go to a pawn shop.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.
