I have Direct TV w/ a digital reciever. Had it about a year now. I noticed some pay per view is in digital but what about the rest of the channels. Is this something you have to pay for? I cant figure out why I cant recieve 5.1 on all channels. I would have never upgraded to the digital reciever.
Thanks for the help

I have had Direct TV for a few years now and what your experiencing is normal. Keep an eye out in the guide for the Dolby insignia which determines if the broadcast is in Dolby or just PCM.
If there is a movie not in 5.1 then I'll use my Dolby pro logic or Logic 7 processors in my h/k 520. FWIW I like my Logic 7 processor better than the Dolby processor.

The easiest answer to the question about "why aren't all channels in 5.1" is that DirecTV only has so much bandwidth right now to play around with. When you add surround sound, you take a chunk of the available bandwidth. Its the same thing with XM... the channels would be at a higher bit rate if they had more bandwidth to play with.Brian Knauss

I so wish they would cut down the number of channels and raise the bit rate. XM has so much potential but right now its not audiophile quality. /endrant -
Of course bandwidth is a consideration on Direct TV channels but I believe the content providers does not wan't to spool everything in 5.1. Its all in contract between the source and the delivery and there is not 1 side at fault here is what I'm trying to say.

All of your DirecTv channels are in digital. That's the only signal the sattelite transmits. You're confusing digital and 5.1 encoding.2 channel - Willsenton R8 tube integrated, Holo Audio Spring 3 KTE DAC, audio optimized NUC7i5, Windows 10 Pro/JRiver MC29/Fidelizer Plus 8.7 w/LPS and external SSD drive, PS Audio PerfectWave P3 regenerator, KEF R3 speakers, Rythmik F12SE subwoofer, Audioquest Diamond USB cable, Gabriel Gold IC's, Morrow Audio SP5 speaker cables. Computer - Windows 10/JRiver, Schiit Magni 3+/Modi 3+, Fostex PMO.4n monitors, Sennheiser HD600 headphones

Dss.
First off you need to have a fiber optic cable connected to your digital receiverfrom your dss receiver to get the 5.1 digital sound when it's present. As said only when the channel is broadcasting in 5.1 digital audio will you get dolby digital. HBO and other pay channel most movies on there are in dobly digital audio. But the orignal movie had to be recorded in it for them to rebroadcast it.This will happen automatically.
As far as Direct Tv bandwidth (like XM radio ) Direct tv is launching another sattelite this year. It will require a system upgrade with another dish. If you notice Dish network owners, they have 2 dishes on there house. Direct Tv is also going this way by the end of this year. They will also be adding many new HDTV channels including local. I may go back to Dss if they keep there word (we shall see ).
