I have a set of Monitor 10s that I would like the specs for but I don't know if they are As or Bs. The tweeter is brushed aluminum with "Polk Audio" stamped at the bottome. I hope you can help me. Thanks.

From your description, it sounds like you have Monitor 10s with SL1000 tweeters. The next step in determining the exact model number is to check the drivers:
MON 10B(84 & 85) SL1000 tweeter, 2x MW6501 drivers
MON 10 & 10A SL1000 tweeter, 2x MW6500 drivers

hi guys,
i'm new to this forum (new, new). i found the link thru a google on the monitor 10a.
here's my interest:
i'd like to build a subwoofer. not thunderous, but clean. to integrate with ceiling speakers in a 7.1 home theater setup. the ceiling speakers use a 6.5" woofer and 0.5" in-line tweeter (a Parts Express item). the sound is coherent and pleasant, and i didn't have to sell the car to pay for it. and it can get quite loud.
i'd like to build around the monitor 10a. perhaps add a second 10a.
i have 1 to experiment with. i like the speed afforded by the dual 6.5" woofers. i would re-build the boxes for greater mechanical stability, and use the behringer 'feedback destroyer' to shape the response -- i think i saw that it should work well with just about anything. i am pursuing this to get my feet wet with box design models, passive radiators, and i always liked the Audio-Pro ACE-BASS concept but could never aford it.
so some questions:
1. anyone have real specs on the monitor 10a?
2. anyone have a real 'review' of the 10a performance? spl? frequency response?
3. does the polk engineer who created this still survive? would he be likely to provide some insight?
4. anybody measure the ts-parameters for the 6.5" woofers? or have mechanical specs on the passive radiator?
and finally,
5. what's the gut reaction? wasting my time? (i am looking at this as a learning experience. there are probably easier ways to get a subwoofer -- but then i wouldn't have learned anything as a hobbyist)
thanks, fermatsEnigma -
Ah, so you have an orphan M10a to experiment on...
Polk actually built something a little like what you're describing, a non-powered subwoofer named LF-14 that used the cabinet of a Monitor 10, with two 6.5-inch midbass drivers and a 12" passive radiator. They show up on fleaBay and on various audio sales sites from time to time, usually under $120. -
