...what the hell is a Kubuki speaker?

I mean, I know that it basically means flashy, loud junk and that meaning came to me through my cognitive ability at inference but I have yet to see a definition. I see this term used to refer to the old Japanese speakers with all the fake chrome, huge 15" woofers and 9 different tweeters and so on. But then I see people reffering to speakers without any of that crap as Kabuki too.

So what is it?

    kabuki
    1899, from Japanese, popular theater (as opposed to shadow puppet-plays or lyrical Noh dramas), lit. "art of song and dance," from ka "song" + bu "dance" + ki "art." Alternate etymology (in Webster's) is from nominal form of kabuku "to be divergent, to deviate," from early opinion of this form of drama. Since c.1650, all parts are played by males.

    Hmmmm......sounds kinda **** to me. A bunch of males playing with puppets. I wonder whose puppets they're playing with :rolleyes:

    "to be divergent, to deviate,"

    I think these are the operative words here ;)

    You're right Jstas, speakers that were designed with the philosophy that the crappier the cabinet, and the more drivers the better.

    Here is a typical example:

    Here is the grand daddy of kabuki:

    Two different molds weren't in their budget (or their intellectual capacity) :)

    Egads!

    Those remind me of speakers from all the Fisher, Pioneer, Kenwood, and Soundesign shelf systems back in the 70s and 80s.

    I thought Kubuki was the wrestler who used to spit that green stuff in Junkyard Dog's and Ted Dibiase's eyes?

    LOL.... am I the only one that remembers those days?:D

    Kabuki = Non-Essential Parts.

    I've heard Polk SDA's called Kabuki.....basically, anything with way too many drivers in an array that simply doesn't need them....or use them.

    My SDA reference is just what I have seen run in other places....obviously since I own a few pairs, I don't think it's Kabuki.
