Hello All -
My Father-in-law is going in for open heart surgery tomorrow morning. I was mistaken a couple weeks ago, when I posted he was having it done then. That was the preliminary testing. They discovered that his mitral valve is torn. He had a heart murmur that kept him out of WWII and the doctors were very surprised that he hasn't had any trouble up until now. He just turned 85 on Christmas day and when he was going for a walk a couple of weeks before that, got short-winded and couldn't make it home. This is what led the doctors to find the torn valve. The prognosis looks very good - his B/P is 112/60, pulse is 60 and the heart specialist said he has the health of a 60 yr old. His bloodwork all came back looking good as well. They are going to operate at 7:15am. They are going to try to repair the valve, but if it is too far gone, plan to replace it with a pig valve. (a nickname I hope, not an actual animal part!). Anyway, I'd appreciate it if you would be so kind as to keep him in your prayers. I am blessed to have such a wonderful person in my life. He truly is a saint of a man.......
Thanks in advance!
Dan

    Great news!
Got a call from the wife this afternoon - They were able to repair the valve. They said that he'd pretty much be out of it for at least 12hrs after the surgery, but my wife says that he's already awake. He is in ICU for the next day or so. Only letting him have 5 minutes to visit every hour or so. My mother-in-law was in to see him and my wife will go in next hour. They said normally at that age the bones can be rather brittle, but that his was still nice and solid (must be all the ballroom dancing and gardening they do for exercise!) Going to be a long recovery but at least he's in good health. Thank you all for keeping him/us in mind and may God Bless you all! :)

    Polk65 -

Update is he was home 4 days after surgery (amazing if you ask me!) and was walking for 10/15 minutes a day, then had a relapse (another couple days in the hospital) but has been out for over a month now and is doing fine. He goes to the mall and walks everyday (last I heard he was up to 33 minutes at a time) and just got the okay from his doctor to drive once again! We've been on vacation for the past 10 days and plan to visit this weekend. He's in good spirits and appears to be back to his normal self! Thanks for inquiring, gives hope in this eff'd up world that there are still some caring folks out there......Thanks for all the prayers! :)
