So, let me get this straight. Your kids bought you video games?! Why has no one told me of this benefit? If I would have known, I would have ten kids by now.

i got one and took it back for another real soldering gun. nothing wrong with em but for what i use it for they dont get the job done. but theyre great for the little stuff though. perfect for circuitry because of its compact size.

What makes it not "real"? It does everything that a "real" soldering iron does, does it not?

If it's great for circuitry, what other use is there for a soldering iron aside from repairing things constructed from tin? Wouldn't that, in itself, mean that it is a "real" soldering iron or do you have a different meaning for "circuitry" than what I am thinking?

sorry, substitute real for "traditional." when i say circuitry i mean things like small transistors etc. actually i have no experience with it and just going on word of mouth by some people i trust on another forum. id give you the link but you have to be a member, but heres what they said:
    "First impressions ... it's a POS.
I couldn't get the damn thing to work. I spent like 5 mins trying to the the red light to light up, and apply the solder, but it didn't work. I was trying to solder the ends of ring terminals, but all I saw was little sparks, but no solder melting.
I was kinda in a rush last night, cuz I was trying to finish my box, and said the hell with it, and got out a cheapie Radio Shack light it up with a lighter soldering pen, and it worked like a champ."

"I just picked up a cold heat as well (they have them at rat shack now). the thing is a verifiable piece of chit! i tried splicing two wires together, and the thing couldnt heat the wires up enough to melt the solder into it. so i will be returning it shortly... anyone know of a good soldering gun from rs?"

"If you plan on doing alot of soldering on circuit boards this is the tool to have. But anything other than that it is useless."

"they work great for the smaller jobs, but dont even think about using them on anything that is sensitive to electricity....."

there was another thread about it, but i couldnt seem to find it
you said you liked it and i hope it does what you need it to

I tried one, what a hunk of crap. It doesn't really heat anything, at least, not in the same sense a traditional soldering iron does. It basically makes a small arc that melts "some" solder. I suppose it would be ok with 1 billion gauge wire but anything bigger, forget it. Cold Heat, at least it lives up to it's name.

For a real soldering iron Weller is the only name you need to know.

For Christmas, I gave the wife a new set of diamond earrings. She gave me 2 DVD's and one of those hand made "coupon books". You married folks know what kind of coupons I'm talking about. Got the kids boat-loads of chit. They got me screw-drivers and tool kits.

You mean the "You get to take me out to dinner and a play and I'll be exausted with a headache when we get home" coupons?

OK, I don't want to read another BS post about Cold Heat being junk. I don't care and I also don't need to know the last name in soldering. I have been doing electronic tech work since I was 9, over 18 years. I know how to solder and I know what gear works best. I have som very nice equipment of my own. I got the Cold Heat iron as agift and I have yet to try it. Given what the advertising is behind it, I am not expecting it to be soldering 12 guage speaker wire or even 4 guage battery cable. What I am expecting it to do is to be able to make mior repairs quickly instead of having to bust out my entire rig. If it does that then I will consider it decidedly NOT junk and place it in my cherished tool tool box and there it will live happily ever after.

Don't like that response? Tough nuggies! :p

I have a cold heat, and for certian applications it works very well. Quick easy and effective. But I have scourched the crap out of circuit boards with it, so I wouldn't recommend using it for that.

Pretty nice tool to have I think, but it will not replace a soldering iron any time soon.

Can't speak for her woofer...but she hits the high notes reeaal good. I guess that means more checking and calibration might be in order.

Its my duty to see this through...like Bush says, "its a tough job". Wish me well.
