Hello everybody,
I was wondering which tweeters I have in my SDA-1's and my monitor 10's... SL??00... I made sure the 10's were the same as the sda's because I use the 10's as my center channel... Also, would it be worth it to upgrade to the sl3000? Would I have to upgrade the crossover also?

The pics are located here:

Thanks,
Greg

Holy CRAP, that's quite a setup....

I believe the tweeters you have are the Peerless SL1000's. A perfectly capable tweeter, and I don't see any reason to upgrade to the SL3000.

Wish I had a pair of those SDA-1's.... they look really nice.

    Greg,

    They're SL1000s - so, you must have Monitor 10Bs if they're original.

I don't believe the SL3000 is a match for your SDA 1s or Monitor 10Bs. Call Ken at Polk CS and see if the replacement SL1000s are any different sonically than the originals.

They appear to have the single brand "Polk Audio" on the tweeter frames. Did Peerless brand a tweeter for Polk? My Monitor 11s have Peerless tweets which, while similar in appearance, are not branded "Polk Audio" and have black domes and frames.

They're just SL1000, not Peerless. The Peerless should not be confused with the SL1000, it's not the same.

Peerless tweeters have no "Polk Audio" stamped into the frame, and are as you mentioned previously BlueMD. They also may or may not have a hole in the center, however most do.

You can't just drop in an SL3000, the crossover would need a change as well, and it simply isn't worth it. If you want to upgrade, get the new Polk replacement(RD-0194)

If I had a speaker with the SL1000, it wouldn't last long, replace as soon as possible. If I had the Peerless, it would stay in the speaker until it was dead.

    Have fun.

    Just a little history...
I haven't, until recently, realized how lucky I was to get these SDA-1's. One of my friends sold them to me for $100. They were her fathers who moved to china and had been sitting in his storage room for years...

    More importantly...
Would the polk replacements really be an upgrade? These tweeters work just fine and I couldn't really imagine them sounding much better. If the replacements are better I will def. upgrade.

Thanks for the surprisingly fast responses.

I think the US Army used a massive SL1000/2000 tweeter array, and Bob Dylan playing harmonica, to smoke Noriega out of that church in Panama. :p

That's as bad as the SL1000 IMO, but sure. The replacement tweeter for the SL1/2000 is the RD-0194.

    LOL - I think we're graded on a curve here. You've got a solid B+.

As you've suggested in the past, some of the solid posts on vintage Polks would make a terrific resource as sticky notes here.

That's the SL3000 replacement number BlueMD. Memorized eh?

    RD0194-1 = SL1000/ SL2000
    RD0198-1 = SL2500/ SL3000

I was **** with F1nut regarding this thread. I just bought enough RD0194-1s that it's permanently etched in my mind. Now, if I could just remember where I put my car keys........ hmmmmm.....

I think the consensus was summed up my Doro and reiterated by madmax:
" If you want to upgrade, get the new Polk replacement(RD-0194)"

"Couldn't he replace it with a new SL-2000 replacement? (forget the number of it)."

I'm not quite sure what Doro means by his statement, but IMO get the new replacements.

    Minor correction:

    RD0198-1 = SL2500/SL3000

HI, just thought I'd put in my 2 cents... The SL1000 tweeter is smaller than the SL2000. Also, the SL2500 seems slightly larger than the SL2000. I fit an SL2500 tweeter on a 1979 Monitor 10 cabinet, but it did not fit correctly. It overlaped the tweeter hole instead of fitting snug inside to make an air tight seal. I made a gasket out of electrical tape and it was then air tight. You would want a tweeter the exact same size as the original tweeter you have in there. Which would just be a replacement SL1000.

I forgot to mention that I bought the 1979 Monitor 10 cabinets (EMPTY) from nascarman. I then turned them into Monitor 10 series 2 speakers with brand new replacement drivers (MW6503), SL2500 tweeters, and the Monitor 10 series 2 crossovers. Brand new passive radiators as well. I wanted the SW105 PR to match, but the guy at Polk told me the SW103 should work just as well. I'm not too sure of that since the SW103 goes those RM series passive subs which is a much smaller cabinet than the Monitor 10. I ended selling those Monitor 10's to my brother.

Raife - Thanks for the correction.

Polkfreak - That's a good point. The SL1000 is smaller, as I found out when trying to replace them with the RD-0194. I wouldn't buy another speaker with that tweeter anyhow, it's just as bad as the SL2000 to me.

I always thought that the late 80's early 90's Polks were the peak of the passive radiator type Polk speakers. With that in mind I'm looking forward to upgrading to the new SL2000 replacement on both my SDA 2A's and Monitor 5 JR++ speakers.
The later models of that era blow away those early ones with the SL1000. The bass is way better too. And overall sound quality.

    (of Polk)
The 3D soundstage is unlike any speaker I have heard. Special effects from soundtracks almost seem like the speaker is shooting 3d objects at me that I could grab while the sound is passing. Such amazing texture and depth. I've heard all of those top of the line speakers at Ultimate Electronics like Martin Login and Kef. I don't think they are as good as the Polks.
