It's called "Wuxia" , the stuff of George Lucas's dreams.
Anyways....that's where one must suspend their disbelief and just let the movie take over you !

Being originally from Hong Kong, I grew up watching stuff like "Hero" on TV and movies. I actually think the Jedi knights in the Star Wars movies was heavily influenced by Chinese martial arts period films.
Wuxia....isn't that just Chinese for martial arts? Jet Li was the national champion of China in Wuxia before he became an actor. He's the legit deal, whereas Jackie Chan is just an action actor. -

Is your mind open enough that if I crap on a plate and call it art you would appreciate and understand it?
There is no genuine justice in any scheme of feeding and coddling the loafer whose only ponderable energies are devoted wholly to reproduction. Nine-tenths of the rights he bellows for are really privileges and he does nothing to deserve them. We not only acquired a vast population of morons, we have inculcated all morons, old or young, with the doctrine that the decent and industrious people of the country are bound to support them for all time.-Menkin -
I thought wushu means martial arts, but what do I know.

Just got the DVD for Christmas.
Mandarin DTS soundstrack is great, very dynamic, and a few fun bass notes. It may be slightly overcooked though. Liked the surround water droplets.
Picture Quality = yuck
The bit rate must suck on the Miramax release. -
I really liked the visuals and the sound, but Jet Li was horrible in this movie.

Are you kidding? That's exactly how they wanted the character to be. You have to be very clear minded and emotionless to be an assassin.Originally posted by Demiurge

No, I'm not kidding at all. I actually discussed this with a Mark Metcalf (Animal House, Buffy, Seinfeld...and many many other movies and plays) at his resturaunt (Libby Montanas) here in Wisconsin. He was very unimpressed with his acting and rather didn't see the point of him in this movie at all. I tend to agree with him very much. I know it's a personal opinion of mine, but I'm glad a thespian agrees. -
Jet Li did a very good job playing the emotionless assassin. Look at the aftermath of the lake fight - the character couldn't even shed a tear !Polk Rt800i -Fronts

I haven't seen all of it, but I thought he did a great job, too.

Jet Li is a badass. At a towering 5'6" he has won the Chinese Wushu national championship five times. He was making movies in China for a long time before showing up over here in Lethal Weapon 4.
Yeah the whole "QT Presents" seems like a joke. Maybe Miramax thought it would sell better that way. -
I thought Li did a great job, very enjoyable on screen. One of his best I thought, his others movies I haven't been too fond of. This is the first movie of his that I actually bought.If...
Ron dislikes a film = go out and buy it.
Ron loves a film = don't even rent. -
As a side note, Jet Li survived the tsunamis that hit the Maldives.
-
Once again...I never said he was a bad actor...I just didn't think he was very good in this role. My apologies.

I saw the movie and thought it was a bit odd. I felt like I was watching each scene 2-3 times because of the way they played it out.
The cinematography was beautiful, but the story line felt like they were holding stuff back.......
OH, and wtf was the "fighting in our heads" crap.......that was probably the most odd.comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -

Concept is no different from "entering the MATRIX" !

Anyone know which release of this movie has the best PQ, and where to get it? I was so disapointed by the US Miramax release.
Or will we see a "Superbit Version"? -
Except that Matrix was a futuristic movie where the matrix was virtually the entire setting of the movie and the fight to overcome it.Originally posted by begbie

The times in Hero it was a few people fighting, then 2 standing there battling in their heads while they stand there, then snap outta it and actually go back to really fighting. It wasn't fluent IMO.
I've give it another watch, but that part really doesn't make sense to me.....comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -

I might be totally missing something here, but to me, the whole fighting in the head thing was just like two chess masters playing chess. they stare at the board for hours sometimes before they make just 1 move. I kind of found that to be similar.Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -
I wouldn't call chess life & death.
-
Movies like these, it's more of an art form display or visual eye candy with a story mixed in undernearth. There's also a difference when a movie in shot in China compared with Hong Kong or Taiwan, it's hard to describe...maybe someone else can fill in the words for me

to me it seems like alot of Americans have a very selective suspension of disbelief.
the general audience will watch movies like X-Men, Spiderman, James Bond flicks, or any pure American "action" movie where the main character gets through a myriad of impossible situations without even batting an eye. but for some reason, when they see someone flying through the air in a foreign flick like this one, the movie is immediately deemed crappy. i just don't get it. why do people believe in fantasies only in their native language? -
We Americans are just like school in the summer..... No Class!

A lack of imagination perhaps?
