How's this for professional satelite hookup.
After waiting 2 years to get hd and getting an assurance from the dish folks that the installer would in my words "know what the hell he is doing", I get the appt. date of friday 8am-12noon. Fine. 1pm,2pm,3pm,4pm,5pm,call dish,6pm,call dish,6:30pm, call dish,6:45pm, call dish and yell,7:30pm call dish, yell, drink heavily, kick dog and give up. 9:30pm(no kidding)as I'm pulling the sympathy steaks off the grill up drive Jethro and Cletus in a 1985(or so) minivan with the ladder on top that is twice as long as the van. Looking like a leftover from a grateful dead concert Jethro walks up, apologizes and says "lets get to work".
1st issue: placement. Jethro says where the dish is mounted now won't work and after much walking around and taking readings with his compass says "We will have to mount it on a branch in the oak tree in the yard". (seriously). My questions about leaves and wind were quickly discounted by the phrase "that should only be a problem on certain days".Oh yea and "That's the way we do it in the field".???? After ruling out the tree in favor of the more traditional steel pole in the yard and deciding that maybe tomarrow morning would be best I let Jethro in the house to see if he knew how to hook this stuff up and then we hit the....
2nd issue: defintitions. Jethro then proceeded to educate me on cables. When asked where the DVI cable was he looked puzzled, said there was no such thing or hookup. When shown a DVI cable he said "oh, we call those componet cables". Ok. When shown a componet cable he said, and this is the payoff, "that's a coaxial cable, I've been doing this a long time and I understand that sometimes the names for cables are confusing to the inexperienced".
......Oh yea. I got hookedup 4 days later with 3 free months

That guy should be fired on the spot. We have no time for shabby Installers.
As soon as he opened his mouth and **** came out, he would have been out the door and a call to the company would have taken place.
I personally take offense to people like this calling themselves Installers. It pisses me off seeing a company like Dish sending these kinds of people to there customers homes.
Cable years ago had nothing but these kinds of people. They have done a better job , not up to my standards , but working in the field , some of the guys actually know something. I blame first the company for not training there people properly and 2nd blame the installer for mot learning his job.
If your not skilled in your field of expertise , do us all a favor and get the hell out.

Guy obviously hadn't walked the path cause nobody showed him the door to the path. Door. To the path.

What good is the path and door, if you slam your head into it during passage?
Only my dog, who walks alone, and **** where she pleases can tell you that.
On that note, you should hear my rigs, it's like the **** olympics over here, straight amateur hour, but it sounds decent.
Cheers,

he was probably a subcontractor or something.. and didn't really know much about what he was doing.

When mine got installed, the guy took down my friggin bird feeder to use the post it was on. No ground block. Strung 100' of coax across my freakin yard.
Being not pleased at all, I called up and had them send out another guy. This time I was home.... 2" galv. rigid conduit, capped set in 150 #'s crete w/ ground block and 3/4", 10' long solid copper ground rod with dual 10 AWG ground wires, all supplied and installed my me. This guy didn't even know how to plumb up the post...
I still had to bury my own coax, which I did in 3/4 PVC conduit.
But if you have to something right, most times you do it yourself..... -
My sister-in-law had a nearly identical experience. The professional installers didnt show up until late in the evening. They first installed the dish on the wrong side of the house then re-installed it on a different side leaving the first mounting bracket attached to the house. They then used a splitter to serve the second TV. The company eventually sent a better-qualified installer to redo everything those two did. Sad.
I took it upon myself to install my own service, I've heard way to many stories like this.Proud SOPA Member since 2005! -
Did my own satellite install as well. I made it look much nicer than I'm sure I would've gotten from a third part installer.
However, when it came time to get cable (moved to a different house), they had to run new service for the internet service. They put a box on the side of the house for the junction, ran the cable much nicer to the pole than it was, and gave me the option of where I wanted them to bring it in. When they put the hole in the house, they sealed it nicely on the outside and put a wall plate inside free of charge. The guy also ran a ground to the outside water tap and secured it nicely with a clamp.
That guy was from the cable company who was providing the service, so no 3rd party. Since he was likely on the clock, he took his time and did a nice job (about an hour and a half for the whole deal).Ludicrous gibs!
