We have had 9 weeks to come up with a shop project, and with the help of Russ I have decided to make a Full Range speaker pair...

Name: AmpraSid Black Lab

Design: Labyrinth, 3 Complete Internal Folds, Square Opening At Bottom

Driver: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=290-045

I plan to make it black, hence the name, Black Lab(yrinth)...

Probally will wrap it in grill cloth or a do a textured black finish similar to SVS's...the shop teacher knows how to do that...

I plan to keep yall updated with pictures, (from an actual camera) the best I can...

So stayed tuned...

Why not use a better full-range driver? The high-end on that driver looks a little sketchy.

Have you checked out www.diyaudio.com yet? Those guys are insanely knowledgeable! They have made a lot of folding horns like you are designing, not that Russ doesn't know what he's doing, that's not what I'm implying. Just trying to provide you with another source for learning.

    Because...its cheap...

The idea for this project is to keep it around 80 bucks.... ah ha

58 shipped for 2 drivers...20 bucks or so for wood...

    cant beat it...

This is more or less to get a good grade yet do something I like to do...

and my mom is funding me on this...so yeah

    Curses to you Mazeroth!!
I was just about happy with my Polk system until you go and put diyaudio.com on here for me to check out. People have mentioned it, but with the link right there it was so easy to browse some of the speaker projects.
I'll try my hardest not to put that as my favorite too so my wife doesn't kill me for trying to overdo things. My WAF has about run out with all the stuff I have bought recently.

LoL! I've been on that forum for a few months now and I have purchased over 250 drivers since then! I bought 96 of the Pioneer 4" full range drivers for $0.49 each, along with 128 of the $0.48 3/4" Onkyo tweeters and I got 32 of the Vifa 7" buyout drivers for $8 each. Going to be building a few line arrays for myself and my brother :D

    The woofs are shipped...

I have been pretty impressed with Pioneer's drivers. They arnt the most accurate or anything...but they can put up with alot of crap...

The 12" woofers I ordered for my Pioneer towers for the DJ system have been through hell and back again x20...

Those drivers have filled up about an acre of land with plenty of sound without issues...

    Pretty impressed, none the less.

I've already built a prototype using cheap 3/4" particle board with 16 of the 4"ers and 24 of the tweeters. The amount of sound they produce is unreal! I had them hooked up to the Sonic Impact $29 digital amp and they were too loud to listen to at about half volume :D

The braces inside the speaker...are you going to be angling them downward to aid in the airflow? Every speaker I've ever seen built like this one have the braces angled downward.

Hmm, The plans recomend for straight forwards...

I could angle them downwards, but from my understanding the concept of the enclosure is to make the woofer think it is sealed, and as the lower frequencies make its way through the tons and tons and tons of polyfill in the first two sections, it will be loaded down and compressed which when released through the big ol port will help the low end considerably...

But if this will help it (Russ?) - I'll try it out. But heck, with my limited skills when it comes to carpentry...LOL They will probally be angled anyways ;)

    Man today was exciting...haha

I had this big ol sheet of MDF waiting on me when I arrived in class. Lets just say when he turned us lose...I was literally rocking.

I got EVERYTHING except one or two minor cuts cut out...

I also ran out of wood except for like 1 small lil piece, so that is good.

Thus far, I have 1 side, back, top and bottom on one speaker...

Russ, I will need those materials soon, so if can ship them out sometime soon, it would be much appreicated. Thanks :D

I expect to be done by the end of next week with the building part...

I have a disposable camera with me, and I will be taking picture at the end of each day and in-between different parts that shows the most progress...

Stay tuned, this is fun... Everyone keeps asking me what size driver, whats it for, is it a subwoofer? WTH are you making?

Then I got others showing me their woofers and all this mess, very interesting...And amazing how ignorant people are when it comes to audio and how influenced they are by advertisements...

We're not doing a wave or tapered pipe. NO angles (well, just 90 degree ones).

Sid, I'll get the stuff out monday.

    Cheers,
    Russ

I now have both cabinet 'constructed' - all except one brace, which I will have to find a scrap laying around to do...and the sides, which I need to leave off until I get all my materials together...

Question is, if I use a good amount of finish nails and glue, do I REALLY need to use screws? I had to tear one side off today because I messed up :o and it took quite a bit of force even with wet glue...

    Decisions, decisions...

I also sealed one enclosure except for around one side...soo....yeah...

Tommorow I cut out the holes, find a piece of wood for the brace.....then...then...then...I wait on Russ :D;)
    :p  :D:)

    Today...

I cut out one hole (almost freakin PERFECT)!!!

I sealed one speaker, I am waiting on one lil scrap piece so I can put the final piece to one enclosure...

Sucks though, Some how one piece was cut to short by a half of an inch...so I gotta make a 1/2" piece to put there...dangit

    Well...

    Today was fun! :o

First, I cut out the last hole, and all was going well till the blade broke on the jigsaw! EFFER!!!!

So then I go get a different jigsaw, different design, etc - and the dang thing cut in such a way that I couldnt see the line, etc that I was trying to cut by, so obviously the circle looks like utter hell, but isnt TOOO bad...

Then, the shop teacher gives me the scrap piece to finish my internal bracings...Since today definetely was going wrong, of course the piece had to be to small or it wouldnt match the rest of the day...

So then, in no mood to pester the teacher, I just cut a scrap and glue/nail it down. Turns out the table saw is out of alignment and it cut wrong, I had to sand it down....

Then, I gotta put another scrap piece on the other brace that was cut to short...

It took me 1 hour + to do this...freakin nuts...

However, it turned out very good!

The next few days I will be sanding stuff down...

    In the mean time!....

Well today we only had about 30 minutes to work...

but I did get one speaker sanded down completely to smooth out the edges....Infact, it is PRACTICALLY a perfect seam (IE: No seams)

The second one though is far from perfect, or being close to perfect...I will work on that monday....

Very close to completeing this build (structural wise) - there is still the audition, then possibly 'finishing' it if it sounds good...
