Newbie just looking for tips

I have recently just started piecing together my home system. This has been a dream of mine for a while, but I have never really done extensive research. I own a JVC receiver with R50 towers, R15 surrounds, CSI3 center and PSW202 sub. I live in an apartment with just one way to configure my living room. I am getting little to none rear sound from my R15's and I am looking to fix this. Oh, Please dont laugh at my receiver. Im just starting and I thought quality speakers first would be better then buying an Onkyo straight out of the gate. Any insider tips and hints would be appreciated.

    First, welcome to the Club... We're gentle for the first 5 or 10 posts (or so)... Unless post one is someone promoting their ebay auction for Polk speakers we'd all kill to own... YOu did not do that, so you're off to a good start.

    Give us the model number of your JVC and we'll see what we can do... Hopefully it's just a calibration issue.

    what are u watching/listening to and what surround mode are you using? how do you have ur dvd player hooked up to your receiver?

    Help us understand how you have your cd/dvd player connected? Are you using TOSLink or analog out of your player to your JVC??

    I am working with a JVC 6040-B. I am using a digital fiber-op connection for my DVD player. Now, I am new so I apologize for my ignorance, but is TOSLink another name for all that I just said? Also, the surround modes that I am referring to are any 5.1 Dolby Digital tracks that I have and/or DTS. I have set my center at 7, my front L and R at 3, my surrounds at 4, and my Sub at 5. I have my center set high because I am getting great FX sound but I have to crank the volume to hear dialogue. I am usually jumping back and forth between 15-20. I hope this helps you help me.

    Yes.

    You should also pick up an SPL meter from Radio Shack. Use it to set the level for your channels. Your receiver should have test tones built into it to help with this process. Consult the manual for more information.

    double check your settings on your dvd player and your receiver just in case.
