I think I hurt my back

About a month ago my wife and I went to a house sale and there was a scroney little man who had bought something and was taking it out of the house as we walked up the home owner stated that there is a strong back to help you get it onto your truck he said that he would help but his shoulder was bad and couldn't lift anything. The mans truck was parked in the grass next to the walk-way, the man was on the portch which had 3 steps I didn't know what it was at first and said that I would help he leaned it back and without thinking I (still on the walk-way) reached out and grabbed the bottom, lifted it up and brought it to my chest. I knew in an instant that that was a BIG mistake, not wanting to drop it I took 2 steps back and turned placing it on his tail gate. The dam thing turned out to be an older trash compactor and weighed over 100lbs and I had the heavy end. We went through the home which had nothing of intrest not even the HT which is why I wanted to go there, all crap. We left and after getting into my truck I looked at my wife and said "I shouldn't have done that". That was on a Sat. come Monday the pain was so bad that I went to my Dr for lower back pain and Rt leg pain. He put me on a steroid and muscle relaxent for a week and no improvement. Long story short, I change Dr.'s as a result of bad office help who would not call me back when I tried to reschedule stating the pain was unbareable. The back pain has gone but the Rt leg (from **** to knee) still feels as though someone is cutting it open with a knife when I bend over or kneel. I am on Mobic now as perscribed from the new Dr. and it has only gotten better it a point. Has anyone done something stupid like this and what helped you?

Sounds like you herniated a disc! I did that, the disc pinched a nerve and my leg started going numb. I ended up having surgery (the day after my 25th birthday, almost 2 years ago) I had to have surgery because I lost all strength in my calf in one leg. I waited too long to have the surgery and now my leg is numb all the time. I did get some strength to return in my leg but I'm no where near 100%. I used to be able to run 4 minute and 15 second miles now I can't run because my legs are worthless.
My advice is go see a neurosurgeon ASAP, get an MRI done to see if you herniated a disc, and hopefully yours can be relieved by seeing a physical therapist. I was not so lucky. You don't realize how important your back is until something goes wrong!

Sounds more like a sciatic nerve (sigh-attic) problem, especially since you injured yourself while lifting. I've been having problems with mine off and on for about the last year. Go see your doctor and have them do a complete lower back exam and x-rays to rule out any other problems.

sound familiar I had a herniated disk removed 1.5 years ago. I too had major back pains and it shot down my leg. the reason for leg pain is that it is compressing a nerve in your spine.....months of demorol and finally surgery...I feel so much better ..so trust me when I say i know what you are going through... I couldn't run for the bus..... it would cramp up and I would start to sweat...it's a **** !! physio did squat for me...I couldn't sleep, so they had me on a mild anti depressant which helps with sleep and pain.. -
Dave, when your back gets better, you should find this scrawney little dude and kick the **** out of him! That happened to me before but, luckily I didn't injure my back as bad as you did. I always find out what it is I am lifting first, but he got you off guard. Hopefully you can avoid surgery. I was never in any pain when I hurt mine. The only time I was in pain was when it actually happened. I was running up my steps and it felt like someone stabbed me in the back, I fell to the ground, HARD. I got up and I was fine. The next day I woke up with some discomfort in my **** and leg but no real pain. The numbness set in later in the day. My herniation was pretty bad, the doctor said he removed 50-70% of my disc during surgery.
Good luck Dave, I hope yours isn't as bad as mine was.
mine hurt the same day the went away for a year then all of a sudden pain gallore....they removed a whole disk in my back -
GoodLuck...

You might want to go to an orthopedic guy too. Sometimes pain like that can be attributable to torn cartilage or hair line fractures in joint ends. They can also tell you if you have a pulled muscle or os strained something.
Either, medical science has progressed very far and the doctors can actually help you out now. Keep at them and give them as much info about what you are feeling as possible.
A few visits to a doctor and possibly some surgery or physical therapy is much more preferrable to a lifetime of pain.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Don't ask us, just keep going to the new doctor you like and do as s/he says. Ask about both drug and non-drug ways to help relieve the pain.

Wow!! I didn't think so many here that have had simular back problems. Do you think it is cause of all these bigger and better upgrades ? Seriously the new Dr. said that he wants to see the progress after 6 weeks and if there's no considerable improvement that he will then send me for a MRI ect., he feels as though that I have a inflammed syatic in my Rt leg and the first Dr. had felt the same from lifting the wrong way. My back now feels fine I just have the pain on the Rt side of my butt and leg, he said that those are still sympoms of back problems. I have another appointment Monday and will ask for my own satisfaction if he will order-up an MRI or ex-ray, if for nothing else just to ease my mind, I've been a mental wreck since I did it, thinking the worst.
Thanks guys,

A little over two years ago, I twisted my lower back moving a very heavy mattress. The mattress started folding over as I lifted my end. When I grabbed the top corner that was folding over, my back was at an odd angle relative to my waist. It is difficult to describe without drawing a picture, but the weight of the top end of the mattress pulled me from an upright position into an upside down "L" position while my back was twisted at about 90 degrees from my waist. The pain was excruciating.
A chiropractor fixed me up in 6 weeks. After the first week of treatment (on Monday-Wednesday-Friday), the excruciating pain was gone and was replaced by a dull ache. I did three treatments a week for the first two weeks and two treatments a week for four weeks. After the sixth week, I was completely pain free. I have not had any problems (in that area) since.
The chiropractor I chose specialized in sports medicine and was recommended by my personal physician.Proud and loyal citizen of the Digital Domain and Solid State Country! -
Dave,
If you go in for an MRI....Take your own ear plugs. My favorites are the little foam ones you can roll up real small then they expand into place. I also use em' around the house too!
