I have a 200MPH capable motorcycle.
The problem is that around 160 or so, I get scared shitless.
There really aren't too many places that have enough road in good enough condition to do 200MPH safely.
I could cruise at 120-130MPH all day and not worry one bit.
Truth be known... anyone with enough balls to go 200MPH is probably a very safe motorcycle rider. Speed doesn't kill. Being stupid kills. Straight road, good pavement, no cross-wind, no traffic in sight.... there isn't one thing dangerous about going 200MPH on a modern sportbike. -

Not ENTIRELY accurate. Like you said at the beginning of your post, there's not many places where you can do this safely. if you're a good rider, sure, on a track or something, most modern sportbikes would hold up at 160mph or more (fastest production I know of goes 181, by the way, I don't know where these 208 mph bikes are coming from, unless it's a modified racing bike). But at that speed, if you hit a good-sized rock in the road, let alone a pothole, you're toast. I've hit a small dip in the road at 105 and felt like I was gonna die. Not to mention that there are other people on the roads, and no matter how good you are, at 150mph if someone ELSE does something stupid, there's precious little time to react.
Just saying. Don't be overly confident. Sure the bikes are engineered to handle those speeds, but the streets aren't a test lab.If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
My Dad has some interesting stories about when he used to run a sportbike shop in Arizona with his dad. This would be in the 70's... some pretty crazy speeds when you can see for miles in any direction around you....Ludicrous gibs!
-
At that speed a cat crossing the road could take you out.
I had a bumble bee bounce off my helmet at about 118, it felt like I'd been hit by a golf ball. The only way I know it was a bumble bee is that part of his black and yellow **** was stuck in my helmet.

Yes, after 2000, the superbikes were speedlimited to about 184. What an injustice. It seems the Porche's on the Autobohn were complaining that they couldn't keep up (my guess). -
What is the top speed on that 1300cc bike with the Japanese name? Haiabusa or something . I am not sure that it is spelled correctly, but I thought it could get pretty close to that speed of 200+ mph. Bikes, modified or not, can get to 180mph relatively easy but from there on the air resistance becomes very hard to overcome, even for cars. If you go back to old physics books you will find out why.
I drove my friends turboed Bandit, 1200cc and 250hp to the back wheel, and that thing was scary. I drive a 600hp car so I am used to speed but flooring that bike was something I barely had the stomach for. Needless to say I only tested it on low speeds. I'm in my 30's and the wild days are over, I value my life more than a cheap thrill ride on a bike. If it was a car I would feel a lot safer but riding a bike is just too unpredictable.
p.s. not saying fast cars are safe either, just a little more forgiving to the conditions and unexpected hazards -
What an interesting thread.....Years ago I tried several times to go faster than 118 mph on my KZ650....yea I know weenie bike, it was fun. Sure there are lots of things that can kill you but in those younger days I did not care. As far as the guy getting busted doing 200, he was doing it in the wrong place........a guy is supposed to plan ahead a little bit to prevent being caught.
200 ?
300 ?.....I doubt it but I would have liked to find my limit...it is a "rush".

Of course the 205 mph was "ESTIMATED" from the air over a quarter mile with a stopwatch. .5 of a second is a difference of 20 mph. Chances of the time/speed being acurate are slim and none."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

When I was in college, a buddy of mine had a crotch rocket bike that would go pretty fast and he thought he was a pretty good rider.
He hit a telephone pole at *only* about 60mph. They picked up pieces of him and the bike for a half mile. Needless to say, he didn't need that other 140 mph to end his life rather quickly.

In the last three weeks in Chicago, there have been three motorcycle deaths. All three deaths were caused by the riders going over 100 mph on busy roads. The most recent was yesterday on Lake Shore Dr. The guy was purportedly going 123 mph when he hit a curb and was thrown off the bike and hit a street light. The other two were guys on the interstate--one hit a wall, and one hit a semi."I got into the music business thinking it was really radical, that it wasn't really a business at all, that it was a lot of people being artistic and creative. Friggin squids. This is why my motorcycle insurance is so high. If you're going to attempt speeds like this, have at least 3yrs under your belt, and do it with some discretion. There are plenty of back road highways where you'll only be endangering yourself if a mishap occurs. I've ridden many times +150mph, but do it on desert highway straight-aways, and only when no other motorist are in sight.
My opinion? you should have to be 18 to ride any motorcycle 250cc and lower, and 21 to ride anything above 250cc. I've seen to many teenage idiots attempting wheelies/stoppies, taking corners too hot, with little or no experience.
I've ridden accident free/ticket free for 12 years, when I went to renew my insurance on my last sportbike--it TRIPLED. Now I ride a cruiser, thanks squids...

Lake Shore Drive?!!! I wouldn't drive that fast in a car on that ragedy **** street! When I lived in Chicago, there would always be a death caused by a reckless driver in a car or on a street bike. The Dan Ryan for example. One of my school mates lost his life back in 1987 while speeding on the D.R. @ 3am on Saturday Morning. He ran into a semi getting on the D.R. off a ramp. The IROC-Z hit the back of the trailer doing about a buck 5. I only want to go that fast in an airplane. The fastest I ever driven was 145 mph on a 10 mile straight away down in Batesville, MS driving in a Mitsibushi Conquest. ALL RIGHT ALREADY, SHUT UP. YOU PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.
I am an avid motorcyclist, I've owned 4 motorcycles since I was 18 years old (I'm now 27). I also raced on a real race track (Nelson's Ledges in Portage County, Ohio) in a sanctioned, competitive organizantion for 2 years.
There is so much BS in this th'd I don't know where to start. First, NO street motorcycle is capable of 205 MPH as the article states. A Honda factory prepared Moto GP race bike, as ridden by Valentino Rossi, the current 3 time defending Champion (and arguably the best motorcycle rider ever, at the age of 22) will come close to 195 MPH on a two mile straight. Keep in mind that he will be going anywhere from 80-120 MPH BEFORE he hits the 2 mile straight. The article, or the state trooper mentioned in the article, is just plain wrong.
Next, hitting a cat at any speed above about 50 MPH does NOTHING. I've seen, with my own two eyes, racers hit groundhogs while traveling about 75 MPH. The groundhog splits in two, and guts go flying everywhere. The bike does not deviate from the intended path one bit.
Now, I do not condone some idiot ridding a sportbike on the freeway at that kind of speed. It gives all of us riders, who like myself are trained, skilled riders, a bad name.
Here is a picture of myself, draggin' a knee thru turn 13 at Nelson's Ledges, taken about 3 years ago.Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -
I agree that people who ride in the manner mentioned above do give motorcyclists a bad rap. While I don't ride (at least not yet), my Dad does and has for 30+ years. He was accident free up until some **** ran a stop sign in Lafayette, LA and knocked him off his bike last month. He ended up taking his Harley down and slid into a curb with all of his weight plus the bikes weight behind him. The guy who caused the accident didn't even get a ticket. He broke every bone in his right hand, and all the tendons and ligaments were torn or ripped. He had to have surgery on his hand and won't be able to use it for at least four months. What's most ironic, however, is that he was carrying his best friend's ashes who was killed on his Harley in Sumner, WA over the 4th of July weekend so that my Dad and their other friends could spread them in Sturgis."I got into the music business thinking it was really radical, that it wasn't really a business at all, that it was a lot of people being artistic and creative. Not true, and it made me very depressed."

Gmorris,
Thanks for sharing the photo.....it is now on my computer background.
That is a "tough" looking blue color.
Lots of young guys riding new street bikes in my neighborhood and some are good with those wheelies:eek: and the wife and I get enjoyment out of just looking at all the bright colors on them. What really makes me chuckle is how wide the rear tires are on the bikes now days!

I used to chase dirt bike riders through my local boy scout camp in the camp trucks. Lousy little **** used to tear everything up. Scared the living hell out of them a few times barrelling through the woods with the lights off and just as I'm ready to hit the trail infront of them, blast the light bar and head lights on! Glad I knew the camp trails better than they did! I wrecked many a dirt bike after they wiped out and the bike slid under the trucks.
Did get one guy hit the back bumper of my personal truck. He flipped over the handle bars and landed in the bed of my truck. His helmet dented the back wall of the bed. His bike was also totalled. They picked it up and it was so mangled, it broke in half.
I never drove into the motorcycle riders. Just positioned the trucks in a spot that blocked trails. The inexperienced riders would run when they were found out. Rather than paying the 250 dollar trespassing fine. So we would do our best to stop them before they left the property and turn them into police. Once the trail was blocked though, many would get startled and try to dump the bike which almost always slid under the trucks or careened off into a tree.
Honestly though, if it upsets anyone, I really don't care. The kids would ride dirt bikes though camp at 60-80 MPH, right through campsites where 30 or 40 cub scouts were sleeping or doing thier activities. I'd rather eff up a dirt biker's day than watched the little pieces of fecal matter kill some poor mother's kid all in the name of a good time.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Simply put, NO. The lame **** description in the article says the bike is a "Honda 1000". No such bike in Hondas stable with the name "Honda 1000". It could be (and probably is) a CBR1000, which was just introduced as an '04 model some months ago. Even with NOS, a CBR1000 will not do 205 MPH.
The real stupid statement made in the article is the method by which the dumbass trooper "calculated" the bikes speed. He used the white lines on the road, & timed the bike using an effin' stopwatch!! You got to be kidding me! Any good lawyer would get that tossed right the hell out of court.Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Bob Mayo. -

Agree with both comments. There are no commercially available bikes that will do that, stock. The Suzuki Hayabusa is on the books as the fastest production bike at 198.6 mph, confirmed by radar.
I hit a Kawasaki ZX-9R that was on it's side on a blind curve doing about 56mph on impact, my bike stayed up--though sustained some fairing and radiator damage. It was either run over the rider or hit the bike (which was already totaled).Source: Bluesound Node 2i - Preamp/DAC: Benchmark DAC2 DX - Amp: Parasound Halo A21 - Speakers: MartinLogan Motion 60XTi - Shop Rig: Yamaha A-S501 Integrated - Shop Spkrs: Elac Debut 2.0 B5.2 -

Dude, you really must catch up on your motorcycle racing.
There is no more 500cc class. It has been replaced by "Moto GP" which has some crazy **** rules. The bikes are all four stroke engines now. The displacement is determined by the # of cylinders. The most common are the 4 cylinder bikes, which are allowed about 1000cc.
Valentin Rossi is now on the factory Yamaha team, and winning the points race by a landslide. He will easily repeat as Champion. Last year & the year before, Rossi rode for the factory Honda team, on the awesome RC211V, whick I believe was a 5 cylinder machine. Moto GP champ both those years.Bob Mayo, on the keyboards. Jstas,
I too worked for the Girl Scouts as a camp ranger and drove the new 4x4 trucks and was very protective of trespassers. At one of the isolated camps I confronted two guys with shotguns and sent them on their way. Heck, they could have blasted me and no one would have known who did it.

Guys, you know that in alot of states, they have white lines that span the road surface and cops use helicopters to measurte speed between the two lines which is a standard distance. They measure the time over the distance with a stop watch, do a calculation and get an average speed. It's not 100% accurate but it can get really freaking close. Almost as close as a radar gun. It's a hell of alot more accurate than a speedometer and a cop "tailing" or "pacing" you.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

so people here are pissed about the method the cop used to estimate the idiot's speed and not the fact that he was driving *excessively* fast on public roads??? nice
