Pioneer VSX-47TX Receiver Overheating

Our first Pioneer VSX-47TX was replaced after a year and 9 months because it was running too hot. It was determined by the repair shop that it had a bad DSP board assembly. Pioneer replaced it with a used VSX-47TX receiver. I placed a thermometer on. It has plenty of ventilation on top and back of receiver. Is this temperature normal, or am I heading for a receiver that will eventually burn up? All our speakers with the exception of the sub-woofer are going through an amplifier.

Pioneer recommends 8" minimum clearance above the receiver. Do you have at least that much? What type/style of rack are you using? Where is the receiver in relation to the rest of your eqpuipment?

I had a Pioneer Elite VSX-41 for a short time, it ran incredibly hot. Hotter than all 5 of my Adcoms combined...
However, at like -40 or whatever the internal fan kicked in...
But even with no amps in use, the thing ran HOT...- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Thank you for your response. There is 12 inches of space above the receiver and the back is wide open..plenty of ventilation!

Top and back are fine, good. But how about the sides and front? Is it in a cabinet with glass doors? Is it at the top of the rack subject to heat rising from the other components in the rack?
Help us help you. -
Yes, there are glass doors on the cabinet. We've run it with the doors open and shut, that doesn't seem to matter. There are three inches on each side. The reason I'm concerned is that the other receiver ran hot and would cause clipping and shut down. That was before I got the amp to put in with my system. I don't believe this is normal, but that's why I'm putting this out to you specialist. Since I only have a 90-day warranty on this used piece of equipment I really need to find out. My Outlaw amp runs luke warm.

Okay, let's have you try this. Re-locate the receiver (temporaily) and place it on top of your rack. Use it as you normally would for a day or two and see if it makes any difference. If you sense no decreas in the amount of heat, or if it shuts down, then return it for another, or for a refund.
My old -37tx ran very warm as well, but it got darn hot when I used it for my Lsi's. Although it never shut down, you could feel the difference.
Earlier you mentioned placing a thermometer on the receiver. What kind of readings did you get? You might want to put the thermometer back on the receiver after you remove it from the rack/cabinet. -
What speakers are you driving? What is their efficiency rating and what is their impedence rating?Political Correctness'.........defined

F1,
He's driving the speakers with a seperate amp via the pre-outs. -
Ah, thanks Frank I missed that. Well, in that case I'd say it's a POS.......get rid of it.Political Correctness'.........defined

Wasn't exactly clear... but yup, if the VSX-47TX's amps aren't even being used, it has real issues...More later,

Russ explained this to me a while back...
When you turn on the receiver, it turns on the amps to full power all the time, constant...
Even when I never used any of the PE amps it ran at the same temperature as when I did....
It is the design I am afraid- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
My Yamaha Z9 tends to run quite hot also. This is a result of the design. I've being giving consideration to installing a super quiet fan in the cabinet to force air into the space in which the receiver is located. I hear the Panasonic fans are very good because they run so quietly . This serves to force hot air away from the receiver and support the internal cooling fan.Polk SRT HT System
