I guess its rebellion. People got tired of needing a lot of talend and skill to be viable in the band market. So I guess that Nirvana came out rebelling against not only the style and fashion of hair bands but also the extreme talent as well.

And youve never heard of Testament, Dokken or Whitesnake? Jesus!

Well being a musician I bet ya Joel has heard of em! Anybody that plays guitar or bass has heard of George Lynch!

hum... i would still consider nirvana to be much more talented than bands of today, even if they don't quite hit the talent of their predecessors...

i think a lot of the problem is the crowd that buys the music too; most people just want it to have a good beat, sound cool, and be loud (this last one really pisses me off); as long as the band doesn't suck, this is all that matters... the second facet of the problem imho is computers... you can take a mediocre band and with the magic of technology make them sound pretty good; gone are the days of doing the same song two hundred times, just to get that one perfect take, and then working on that take in the studio... now they just take the first decent recording and hack it to bits in the studio... imagine what something like metallica would be like if they did their best performance and then worked on it with today's technology...! third, bands come and go far too quickly to be able to develop properly; even if they have potential they're out of the market in five years, at most, for all intents and purposes ( i mean, hansen still makes music, but who cares? well, bad example, no one cared in the first place, but you get my point :) ) artists don't last for 20 years any more... i mean, i just bought the new prince cd, and he's been around for how many years? probably more than i've been alive, and he's still chuggin away, making good music...

p.s. you are old :D but i have heard of george lynch

Prince? Are you wearing a dress right now? :p

And as far as Nirvana being talented, I just cant let that one go. Just because they sold an **** load of CD's doesnt mean their talented. Their music was as simple as music can be. It was just some aimless strumming on open chords and whiney vocals. The drummer was very basic and did nothing creative (however Grohls' stuff with Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters aint that bad).

If you base talent on album sales then Britney Spears is one talented chick! She cant sing, doesnt come up with her own dance moves, doesnt write any of her own music but shes hot and sells a lot of CD's. Whats wrong with this world? Damn MTV!!

Of all the popular bands right now, Joey from Slipknot is the baddest. Hell he's one of the baddest drummers period!

Disturbed and especially Sevendust also have excellent drummers but Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater is THE MAN!

strange, i never really noticed disturbed's drummer to be that great; i suppose i just never thought about it; prince - who gives a rat's **** about who makes the music, imo it's about the music itself... for those who can recall the vocals for smashing pumpkins (they're really high and nasally), the vocalist is this big bald guy with a black trench coat etc... and he sings like a pubescent girl with a head cold... i personally like nirvana, i'm not trying to convince you they're great :) just an opinion that is in no way based upon cd sales...

Oh dont get me wrong, Im not trying to trash your taste in music. God knows most dont like mine! LOL ;)

Disturbed's drummer is very good because A) he uses a double bass kit and B) his tracks are very tightly written and follow tightly with the rythm. This along with the fact they have some complex rythms makes that a pretty impressive feat.

cody - hell yes, smashing pumpkins is good stuff, it's just a shock to see the singer after hearing the voice...
mac - i didn't know that the drummer used a double kit, i just assumed that he had really fast feet :)... and yeah, now that i listen to it, it does match very well with the rest of the song... i guess i just took that as a given (i tend to focus more on vocals and high guitar than the rest)...

btw, what did sp change into? there's a new band, i forget what it's called, but it's pretty good too...

yeah as far as bands now slipknot is pretty tallented, A Perfect Circle is too but a lot of their tallent shows in their creativity...

one of my friends is a drummer and to make himself faster he practices with 5lb weights on his feet and arms for hours at a time... talk about a workout... he may not have a lot of muscle mass but he's toned to high heaven...
MacLeod: I guess youre lucky Polk has such lax hiring standards.

Yeah I tried that for a while. Get the weighted wrist bands and ankle weights. I finally dumped the idea cause it messes up your bass drum playing. It adds weight to your down stroke which messes up your groove when you take it off.

I learned how to play to bands like Slayer, the real Metallica, Violence, Kreator and other extremely fast bands so I got fast in a hurry. After about 5 or 6 years of that tho I started slowing down and getting into the more technical aspect of playing. Thats when I started listening to Dream Theater and got into a whole new world!

Now I havent played in 2 years. I probably suck now! Thats the worst thing about drums...no volume control. :(
