Which brands and models are you asking about?Political Correctness'.........defined

Willow,
Provided the amps are of the same quality, the sound difference would not be that big. If I remeber correctly, a 3db increase in sound means you have to have a doubling of amp wattage. So...in this case you would gain a 1db or so increase with the 400 watt amp, provided the amps are of the same quality.
Others might mention more headroom etc....
what are you looking at?Polk LSi 15 Fronts

I was just curious that is all but thanks for all the info

My tube amps have a switch which doubles the power. 50 watts to 100 watts. The difference is a slight volume increase. I think you need 4 times the power to double the output.Vinyl, the final frontier...

max,
It's double the power per 3 db increase (which is double the output).
What most ears preceive as double the volume is more on the order of 10 db.More later,

That is all good but saying "double the output" will lead him to think it is twice as loud.

Output power is only one of many performance parameters that must be evaluated when choosing a receiver or an amplifier. More watts does not automatically equate to "better" sound, particularly if the higher watts come with higher distortion.
In the case of receivers, manufacturers sometimes cut costs on the power amp section in order to include more features in the preamp/processing section.
Internal parts quality and the ability of the amplifer or receiver to drive low impedance loads are also factors to be considered.
