Using xbox as DVD player, should I upgrade?

Would this be a worth while upgrade? I was either going to get a good dvd player, or upgrade my center from a csi3 to a csi5. Which do you think would have the most effect?

I'm always up for a project, I'll have to check that out.
I'm using the high definition pack, but it's more of an improvement in sound I'm looking for. Not that I'm unhappy with it right now, I've just heard there might be an improvement by going to a better dvd player.

Any dvd player over $100 will look and sound better than an Xbox or PS2. Sorry, but they're not very quality for movies. Yes, I've A-B'd them with a cheap Sony $110 dvd player and noticed a difference in picture and sound.

I must say that with my component cable the PS2 puts out one heck of a nice picture...have I seen better....well yes I have.

Will I upgrade to a better stand-alone DVD player (I have one, but its best output is S-video...shudder)? Yes I will, but in the time where I decide on a player I can certinally handle the PS2 picture. Now the compatiability of dics and the controls leave a LOT to be desired....

Just my thoughts about game systems for DVD...not too much experience with the XBox though.

Isn't the XBOX DVD playback done at 480p at best? I have a fairly entry level DVD player and it beats my XBOX hands down

I always wanted to try something with bypassing the DAC on a PS1. To me it always seemed like the mechanism was solid.

Sorry for the derailment, but when else would this come up.

If you use the optical output and bypass the internal DAC on the PS2, you will notice one helluva improvement. The Denon3801 internal DAC's are tremendously better than the Dac's internal to the PS2's. No surprise there. I was surprised to realize just how bad the PS2 DACs are when A-B'd.

Of course, if you have a progressive scan capable TV and DVD player, the XBox cannot do that.
I'm not saying the Xbox will look like you're using an F-pin or something but the picture is not going to be as clean. Just because it plays DVD's, doesn't mean it was designed to do that specifically. That was just a lil added bonus. I used to use my PS2 for my DVD player until I upgraded to the Denon and noticed new levels of improvement. This was on my old 27" 9 year old RCA tv with only composite audio/video in, no S-video. Now that I have my Sony 34", the progressive scan is amazing.

The xbox will progressively scan some games (and even put others in hd) but it's unable to progressively scan a dvd movie. Pretty sure I read that in the manual.

    DVD quality.......

ok so you have an Xbox running DVD's..are you happy with it?

A better higher quality DVD player will make a video difference. If you tv doesn't except progressive, you can only go so far with it.You have to ask yourself if it's worth it or maybe getting a better monitor to display better resolution. Then deside on a better player.

The xbox is not bad at all if you're using the S-video or component cable. I still like my Pioneer DVD player more for picture quality. But it's not a day and night difference.
