If you had one choice...

If you had to narrow it down to one choice, what is the single most important component in a home theater system? Why?

a big screen?
receiver?
speakers?
subwoofer?
separates?
room size/layout/acoustics?
calibration?
interconnects/speaker wire?
source?

I would say it's the subwoofer because not only do you hear it, you also feel it (assuming it's a good one and set up properly). The sub is what puts you inside the movie, even if it's mated with less-than-enthusiastic gear.
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

The single most important thing isn't even on your list....

    The speakers...

But really, I have come to find that the Preamp, Amp, CD Player, and Speakers all play equally important roles...

Without a TV (any size) it's just a big-assed audio system.

Gotta give ya props on this one. Only one or two movies a year are diamonds worth watching. The others are simply lumps of coal.

    I could see it now...

An excited couple buys a 12 foot screen, a projector - they sit down with a big smile and hear no sound...

SPEAKERS. No other component has the potential to change the character of your sound like speakers.

The system is the single most part of a home theater system.

Balance is key.Everything must work well together in order to get the max out of the system.Remember when building a SYSTEM thats exactly what your doing.Wire isn't,sub isn't,the damn screen isn't the room isn't......it's how all of it works together.

You can't have a single most important part of a home theater system.

I have to agree with Dan. Goes back to the old "Ferrari engine in a Yugo" analogy.

Amen to the watchable software. HT is worth **** with most of the schlock coming out of Hollywood or wherever they create the stuff.

Seeing how about 90% of your "systems" character is defined by THE SPEAKERS, they are easily the most important part of any "system".
