I have an opportunity to Buy and near new Adcom 5500 (actually a trade for some car product I have) Basically the price is $450.

What do you think about that price?

How will it sound with the RTi12s?

Would you run them direct or biamp?(I know likely to have lots of opinions on this one)

thanks in advance

    That's a very good price for a near-new GFA-5500.

I can't help you out with your question about the RTi12's since I have never heard that speaker. I will say that I have four GFA-5500's and they have sounded great with every speaker I have used them with.

I tried biamping my SDA 1.2TL's with two GFA-5500's. It sounded much better than a single GFA-5500 but not as good as a single GFA-5802. I also tried biamping with two GFA-5802's and I heard no improvement over a single GFA-5802. You can read about it here SDA 1.2TL Biamp Adventure and here SDA Biwire and Biamp Adventure .

Assuming you are interested in an Adcom amp, rather than biamping, I'd just get a single GFA-5802. You can get a used GFA-5802 in the range of $850 to $950, which is about the same as you would pay for two used GFA-5500's.

If you deside to get new or would like info on this amp call them they are an authorised dealer for Adcom (I checked). There prices are unreal I called on the 300x7 model and their price is $2300 shipped and a is very nice guy. I also just ordered 2-4ft w/HQ rca termanals DH Labs Silver Sonic interconnects I hope $48 shipped is a good price cause I went ahead and ordered them to try the incomming Adcom.

P.S. I got this guys info from a fellow polkie a while back, he just stumbled upon them and I haven't heard much of anything about them or there deals since so I just thought I would call them again and give them a try.

The guy who offered me the Adcom 5500 for $450, has some other amps as well he asked me if I was interested in.

He also has amps by SAE and Shure, has anyone heard of either of these amps? he has an SAE amp with similar power specs as the adcom for $400, and 3 Shure amps that are about half the power and about $200-225 each.

Any thoguhts on SAE or SHure?

I have a 5500. Great amp! I had my 150s I used to have biamped with it driving the woofers an an adcom 5400 (125 watts per) driving the tweets/mids.

The amp is not warm or laid back, but it's not bright either. I consider it to be right in the middle, just about totally neuteral. Because of this, I felt is was a very good match for the 150s since the tweeters in that series were a little more laid back than the trilams in the series before and the vifas in the current series, at least to my ears.

Have not tried the Adcoms with my new 12s though. I am running them with NAD now.
