DVI cables

Is a DVI cable a DVI cable? Would there be any difference in a DVI cable that's connected to a flat panel monitor be any different than a DVI cable that's for the HD TV's?

    No no different.there are different quality levels but the cable is the same no matter where you buy it.

    Do you own DVI gear?Or thinking of going digital?

    If not,I would wait out HDMI.Its a better connection.Audio and video instead of just video.

    DVI is very cool and very good looking.

    Funny, was just doing some research on HDMI...

    I'm sure having the video and audio in the same cable is fine...but I will nevel know becuase I just won't do it...

    Being an audio enthusiast, I'd never be able to go that route, just couldn't do it...

    Again, I'm sure the technology is great and it works flawlessly, but I still won't do it...

    I have like 6 cables that I've removed from equipment that we're installing where we're not utilizing those cables. I don't even know what the whole DVI thing is about, but I have them and thought I'd ask.......

    Actually, there are two different DVI cables. One has extra pins. I think one is called DVI-D and the other is DVI-A. However, I think most things are DVI-D. You can probably find out more by googling it.

    As far as I know, there r 2 types of DVI. One is DVI-A, A which stands for analog. Basically, it is designed to send an analog video signal which is more refined than a typical Component Video signal, thus getting a better PQ.

    Then you have DVI-D, D standing for digital. This one sends a pure digital signal. Diff. in PQ from DVI-A? I don't know, but is supposed to be better than component also. I think this is more common than DVI-A, but I'm not sure on that either.

    From what I can tell, the difference between HDMI and DVI in picture quality is minimal. The importance of having audio in one cable? Very low. Only makes sense if you're viewing solely with TV speakers instead of thru receiver/separates.

    Hi gregure et al - from my research the only difference between between HDMI & DVI (other than the obvious audio channel signal on HDMI) is that HDMI can be put on longer runs. On a short run (can't remember exactly what the definition for 'short' is for this, but I think it was 20 or 25 feet and less) there is no difference in the signal - both HDMI and DVI will pass the exact same 'video' signal.

    I've also read that a $25 DVI-D cable under 20 feet (or so) will perform the EXACT same as a same length $200 DVI cable.

    I personally have not tested that - I haven't tested DVI at all :(. Just offering some information I have gathered on it from various web sites and forums like this.

    I'm still waiting for an affordable (and available in Canada) universal DVI-out player. I'm set on the Samsung 941 - but it's still not released.

    Sony is supposed to come out with a DVD player equipped with a DVI out in the fall. Supposed to be under $300. That may sound bad, but Sony has a tendency to produce decent products even at modest prices. Might be worth checking out.

    Thanks for the tip gregure - but I believe Sony doesn't support the DVD-A audio format (and I have about 15 of those disc's now - I currently have a Pioneer 563A universal player), only SACD. At least, that is what I have read as from what I understand Sony is one of (or the one) that started SACD.

    Too bad, as that player would be in my budget. I'd like to get the Denon 5900 - but I'd need to win a lottery first before I'd be able to justify a $2700 DVD player (cdn funds).

    You should DEFINITELY consider the 2900 model. I bought one from DAKMART, but mine was $675 at the time.....looks like you can get the silver one for about the same coin that I paid for mine......I would have got the silver had that been an option for me at the time......

    Samsung has a univer player that is the model HD841 that offers DVI output and also plays DVD-a and SACD. for under $200

    What are the dac's on that thing though....while the Denon may be higher price, I think that it's definitely capable of more than the basic universal......ya know?

    The unit I spoke of is the Sony DVP-NS975N. It's coming out sometime this year, will have DVI/HDMI digital video output adn be around $300. Alas, you are correct, the article only mentions SACD playback, not DVD-A, although it did not say the player did not have DVD-A either. This is according to the latest issue of The Perfect Vision.

    greg - I'm pretty sure it's the betamax/vhs thing with Sony - Sony was one of the propieters of SACD and that's all they do (doesn't mean they won't switch in the future though). It's too bad, but there always seems to be a format war out there of some kind, I guess the next big one will be bluray vs. HDDVD.

    brett/danger - the 2900 doesn't offer DVI, only the 5900. I believe the new ones coming out (2910 & 5910) will both be HDMI. Unfortunately, here in Canada the 5900 msrp is $3380, and the 2900 is $1870

    The Pioneer DV59-avi is only msrp'd at $1600 and offers HDMI out. Even though it is generaly considered that the 5900 is the best player out there currently, the DV59-avi is not far behind, and at less than half the price would be the one to get unless you were rich :(

    The 841, believe it or not, is not out yet in Canada. Of course the 941 has not been released yet. I would like to get my hands on both of these players, and if I notice no difference in PQ, the 941 would go back. I have read though that in the US the 841 has had some problems with the loader. I've also read the DAC's in this machine are very very good. I doubt they would even be close to the burr browns in the Denon line, but you may need a lot of high end stuff to notice the difference anyway.

    Oh, as an aside, my DVD-A discs from AIX records that I got have made my RT800i's sound unbelievable. I knew that a speaker was only as good as the recording being put through them, and some speakers have charactersitics to, shall we say 'color up' flaws in a recording. But when you play music that was originally recorded in hi-res format (96khz/24bit), well all I can say is that these RT800i's are really really sweet!

    Now, once I get my ICBM from Outlaw Audio I'll be all set :D
