So, who can tap the glass the loudest?

Get out your RatShack meters! Who can hit the highest db's on the Darla glass tapping scene? Measure from your listening position.

Please submit to this thread:
1. SPL meter reading
2. Make and model of subwoofer(s)
3. # of feet from your listening position to the subwoofers.
4. Crossover point.
5. Brand and model of subwoofer cable.

Now, get out there and find a happy place!!

Regards,
PolkThug

Or your ears and therein lies the problem ... It's not that tough if you turn it up to get 120+ dB ... The question is do you really want to go there ?

I know I wont win the competition but I get 116 dB C weighted fast. It is very violent and my walls shake, I have never bottomed the sub out but it probably comes very close as excursion is very high in the 30 Hz range at these dBs. I had all other speakers unplugged anyway so this is just the sub.

I use a Adire Audio Tempest driver with the matching Adire 250 watt amp and Adire designed EBS alignment enclosure tuned very low, about 16 Hz. The sub is not designed for high SPL, but it is designed for efficiency and low extension instead. Also my sub is equalized flat with a slight house curve. The room is about 15 feet by 28 feet.

The sub is about 10 feet from the listening position and it is crossed over at 100 Hz.

Polk Thug, what will your dual subs do?

Gotta ask, what is the frequency range of this *nemo bass content* ?
    - Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit.

I also unplugged all my front speakers. They might go higher, but for now, I feel 'safe' with this:

    1. 108db, fast,C,max (reading straight off meter, not adjusted)
    2. Polk 505 x2
    3. 11 feet away
    4. 80Hz x-over
    5. Monster sub cable w/Monster splitter

I think the Darla Bass is centered around 30Hz.

I know what you mean. On the first pass I was at 105 dB and -15 dB from ref. and that scared the **** out of me.

    Edit:

That appears to be from FD2, the same chart comes up even when I click on Nemo.

Right now Ron Stimpson (SVS customer service) is getting flooded with calls.

Trey: "Yeah, I was listening to Finding Nemo, at uhhhh, normal levels and then the sub quit working."

Ron: "You were trying to win PolkThug's Darla tap contest weren't you!"

Aren't 18" woofers just like the people who buy the Cobra Mustang, Pontiac GTO, Etc....just an easy extension of their friendly member?

And by the way, it doesn't look like that above pic :)

Aw, man, sent Finding Nemo back to Netflix this morning ;)

Not that my poor STF-2 wouldn't have gotten taken out back and beaten with a stick by some of the subs you guys have.

Never the less, the bass I did get on this movie was amazing. I also finally got the hear that "dink" on my Polks when the torpedo hits the mines - that was indeed a great tweeter moment.

No, they are at my friend Luther's (Wardsweb) house. That is what they are capable of, I don't think he's ever driven them anywhere near that level. It would damage the structure of the house.

I met with the designer (Johan) last week, and I'm looking into a 'baby' horn for myself. Actually, Johan and I have known each other for a while, and you have to hear these bass horns to believe it. I wish Doc lived down here, he'd go absolutley nutty.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Have we determined if that waterfall plot is from Finding Nemo or not?

I'm not quite sure how to read that graph, but it looks to me like the loudest bass is at about 65 Hz or so. Is that right?

Yeah I've seen pics of his horns. His ML's are sitting on them. Those levels would definitely damage the house. Come to think of it, my SPL meter cant even read levels that high.

EDIT: I dont know if that is the right chart, you can check them all out here

    1) 109dB using RS uncorrected meter
    2) 10" Titanic Mark II sealed sub (small volume) designed by Vance Dickason
    3) 11 feet
    4) 120 Hz (upper limit for LFE)
    5) Monster something

I'm using a BFD to EQ the sub with a 7dB house curve slope between 32 Hz and 100 Hz.

Maybe you are getting cancellation because of the way your subs are situated. You should easily be able to get between 75-90db. Try stacking them and measure again, make sure to put something between them so the top doesn't 'walk' off. While your at it, shove them in the corner for testing, you should see a db increase.
