the old lsi7 and the new lsi7
I just compared the two and there is definitely a difference. The gloss on the newer lsi look better and sleeker than the older one - no borders on the newer lsi. also, the veneer is better on the newer ones and seems a little smoother to the touch i think.
now, i have a question... how do i smooth out the veneer on the older lsi? can i apply another coat of that stuff u put on (kind of like a clearcoat) over the wood that you just stained? is there even such a thing?
basically, i just want to know if i can improve on the older lsi veneer...
god i am so illiterate when it comes to woodworking.... .

Hi Joey!
You've got an awesome step by step "instruction" manual from F1nut which I saw in ur previous thread.
Quote:
"You want to make them blacker...no problem, it's easy. First remove all drivers, tape off everything except the panels with blue 7 day release tape, scuff sand the panels in the direction of the grain with 320 grit serated sand paper, apply a black glaze, let dry for 15 minutes then wipe off excess, let dry for 2 hours, next mix in 2oz. of Black Solar-Lux dye to one quart of satin lacquer cut 50% with lacquer thinner, place speakers in spray booth and apply at least two full coats. Remove tape and let cure for at least a week, then rub out to the desired sheen."
Same procedure will work if you wanna smoothen the panels too. Just work with the 320 sandpaper a bit more, with lotsa TLC. F1's advice is the best you can get, its exactly what I would have done. That is, if I was using lacquer.
As for using clearcoat....Im not sure of that....F1 should probably know. Or the guys at Lowe's (no affil ). Same procedure as above, just a little different to accomodate the clearcoat finish. Probably just a substitution of lacquer with clearcoat. Also, be careful with the blue 7 day release tape, it might not work well with the black piano finish. Stick a small piece and remove it to see if the piano finish gets spoilt before u start. Good luck on the project! -
i saw that too.... i was hoping there was an easier way.... without having to strip the old stain. oh well...Magico M2, JL113v2x2, EMM, ARC Ref 10 Line, ARC Ref 10 Phono, VPIx2, Lyra Etna, Airtight Opus1, Boulder, AQ Wel&Wild, SRA Scuttle Rack, BlueSound+LPS, Thorens 124DD+124SPU, Sennheiser, Metaxas R2R

Personally I like the woodgrain on the old ones better. The new ones are smoother and look more like a vinyl contact paper than a real wood veneer. The old ones look a lot more like real wood to me.
I do, however, like the seamless black gloss corners on the new ones better. -
Alright, here we go again.
Lacquer is a clearcoat, any clear finish can be called a clearcoat. However, different clear finishes have different properties and purposes.
Before I go any further, do you have a place to work, to make a bit of a mess, to spray a finish?
BTW, this doesn't involve stripping anything.Political Correctness'.........defined

Wait a minute!
Do you want to make the panels blacker or make the finish smoother?
BTW, to use the Minwax stain you would have to strip the finish first. You can not apply it over a clear finished product. The only way to make them blacker without stripping is how I outlined before. As I suggested, take them to a pro shop and show them what I wrote about glazing, etc.Political Correctness'.........defined

lol I thought "clearcoat" was a generic term for polyurethane finishes which dont need a final rub for sheen. Sorry about that, prolly just my misconception. You're the man F1! Kris

oops... i think i got confused...
ok ok F1... how do i make the finish smoother? thanks!
... and is there any way I can make it shinier too? THANK YOU F1!
i think the side panels would look really nice if they were a little smooter and much shinier (glossier)..!!Magico M2, JL113v2x2, EMM, ARC Ref 10 Line, ARC Ref 10 Phono, VPIx2, Lyra Etna, Airtight Opus1, Boulder, AQ Wel&Wild, SRA Scuttle Rack, BlueSound+LPS, Thorens 124DD+124SPU, Sennheiser, Metaxas R2R -
I don't get it,why does the surface need to be smoother?Do you touch it?
Why mess around with them? You could possibly destroy them.
I can almost see wanting them blacker to match the decor of your room, but smoother?
Please explainDan

i just feel that it looks too raw - i dont know, maybe it is just me - but that is how i feel. of course i wont do anything to it that i feel will ruin it... these are lsi7s of course, they aint exactly cheap.
however, since blackening it is out of the question, i would still like to know if it is possible to make it glossier... F1 where are you?Magico M2, JL113v2x2, EMM, ARC Ref 10 Line, ARC Ref 10 Phono, VPIx2, Lyra Etna, Airtight Opus1, Boulder, AQ Wel&Wild, SRA Scuttle Rack, BlueSound+LPS, Thorens 124DD+124SPU, Sennheiser, Metaxas R2R
