I was looking at the back of one of the subs at Ultimate last weekend...it was the KEF 2150 and found something new to me...

There is a switch called "slope control" marked 12/24dB that is not explained. Do you have any idea what this is for?

The KEF web site gives few details.

It probably changes the crossover from 2nd order (12 dB per octave) to 4th order (24 dB per octave). It would add flexibility and could be useful depending on what speakers you use.

Can you expound just a bit? When you say "2nd order (12 dB per octave)"...what does that mean?

All filters have slopes (i.e., how quickly they ramp down the signal). Slope is measured in units of dB/octave.

The steeper the slope, the higher the order of the filter.

    1st order = 6 dB/octave
    2nd order = 12 dB/octave

    and so forth.

Typical low pass filters on subwoofers are 4th order, but most AVR's impose a 2nd order high pass on the mains, and there is a mismatch of slope. The ability to alter the slope of the filter to achieve parity with the corresponding high pass is a really nice feature.
