Hello all,
My SRT Durango is in the shop getting some warranty work done. The dealership gave me a loaner a brand new 2016 Jeep Cherokee. It's a Hybrid.
So as a car guy, I like to look over this vehicle and give it a review and personally experience what it has to offer.
So It's a brand new design as the Cherokee has returned to the jeep line up. I understand it went away for a little while. I didn't know that but honestly I don't pay a lot of attention to what Jeep is doing as I'm not a big fan of their current line up since they redesigned the Grand Cherokee back in 2020-2021 .
Anyway this hybrid is something I never owned or lived with for any kind of time and since I have had it now about a week, and will for about another I'm really getting to know it. I gotta be honest, I can't compare it to the SRT Durango as it's a completely different thing. The SRT is an enthusiastic vehicle and the Cherokee is a A to B thing. I think it's designed for the person who wants something nice, something useful but nothing to get excited about.
The Hybrid power plant to me is very under powered. It has a hard time getting out of its own way. Again I'm use to having 500 hp under my foot on demand and now having 200 hp is really differnet. I don't know how people drive around in vehicles that feel to me under powered.
My Wife drives a V6 AWS Charger and it feels like it has the proper amount of power to do what it does. It's a little more Sporty if you will, it's AWD it's kinda nice to drive, it's very comfortable but when you need to pass or get onto a highway, it feels like it does all of that properly. The Jeep however, is a different animal , it takes it awhile to get up to highway speeds, it's like a putter kinda thing. It goes but does it at a very slow rate.
So the starage ability of this vehicle is nice. It's bigger than the previous Cherokees I have driven and its interior is comfortable and nicely laid out. I like the seats and I like the visibility. However why do we have to re invent the wheel? I mean round is round and round has worked for decades. The Jeep has a squareish steering wheel. Im not seeing the benefits. It's odd . It works but it feels bizarre.
The Other bizarre thing is how you exit the vehicle. You have to press a button instead of using a door handle. Again another thing that is different than the normal that I'm not seeing benefits from the tech.
The Screen is fine, I don't need it to be as big as it is but screens is what new cars do.
Overall the design is fine, it looks nice, it's comfortable to drive around in, I put almost 140 miles on it so far so I'm really getting into the livable moments of what it's like.

A 2016 jeep would be indistinguishable from a large-ish pile of rust.

It’s actually pretty easy! We think of all the money we saved on a highly depreciating investment, insurance, gas, and over-priced maintenance. Further, 200hp is more than capable of getting through traffic, and cruising at 85mph (the interstate 80mph limit +5). Dan, I think you are just not used to the hybrid with eCVT. It is a different feel. The combustion motor stays in the peak efficiency RPM and the speed increases smoothly. Hybrids are usually quick off the line due to the electric torque, but at higher speeds, they show their limitations and preference to economy. After all, it is just a 1.6L engine in a 4500lb vehicle.

The steering wheel in the Jeep looks a lot like the wheel of that Subaru .
Again I don't see the need for these fancy style steering wheels. Nothing wrong with round.Dan

Pretty sure Teslas have a stupid button, plus a mechanical means of opening the door, if needed in an emergency? I doubt the NHTSA and/or other federal nanny organizations would allow only an electronic button.
If you think about it, you press the button in the direction the door opens vs. pulling a mechanical handle the opposite, or some other direction like up, first. After you got used to it, wouldn’t the stupid button be more efficient?
