Costco had a tremendous sale on wood/felt acoustic panels. When my girlfriend asked me if that would work in my house, at first I thought she was wanting me to panel my walls......I thought, ugg no way, then took a closer look and thought, hey, this is good stuff.
At $30 a pop for a four panel box of 2'x2' panels, it was a no brainer. Here's what I have done so far....

How thick is the felt? You could install those with a 1 in. gap between the wall and the felt if you want more sound absorption.George / NJ

The felt is 1/4" thick. The overall product is 1 3/4" thick. I'm certain you could shim it out to make a 1" gap if you want.
The screws that come with it are 1.5" so you'd need longer screws for sure.
These panels aren't very heavy. No need for wall anchors. Four screws per panel into the drywall and these babies are solid.......and are trimable. I took a box cutter to trim a slat off the bottom on one in order to clear a wall socket.
They also come with end cap slats. A top and bottom end cap slat x 2 per box.....pretty nice deal.
