Not the music, just the dynamic range of the recording.
Is the higher the number the better or is it the other way around?
Or does it mean nothing?
That website has an FAQ page to answer some of your questions. -
Ok, tanks.
So, from the read on the FAQ, higher dynamic range is preferred. Doesn't mean it'll sound good but is more better than compression. -
The higher the number IIRC means they have brick walled the recording, meaning no dynamics. Those recordings when you crank up the volume go to S*** get very distorted very fast. Listen to Van Halen 3 to get a quick understanding. That album is so bad, not necessarily the music per say, the distortion in that recording is out of bounds.

Higher number is better. Lower number means brick walled/compressed. Example, most of Steely Dan's albums are 14-16. Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons albums are in the 5-7 range.
Van Halen's early CDs and vinyl were not really bad as far as dynamics, but they were just grungy and distorted. The DR isn't the only factor to a good recording.

Thanks, I didn't look this time, I did use it way back when the loudness wars were going strong.
Yes I'm aware of the early VanHalen, The last album Eddie did was VanHalen III with the Extream singer, almost unlistenable. -

Ah! I never heard that album. Wasn't really aware of it. I thought you were talking about Women and Children First and using III as nickname. Yeah, 1998 was a few years into the Loudness War and probably some of the worst sounding stuff. -

It is good for most music, but not very accurate for classical music. -
Has anyone compared Spotify to Apple Music? I have not yet but I'll say this, Apple Music does sound pretty damn good lately. I really dig the Spatial Audio and Atmospheric music they have. I don't always like it in that format, most of the time I enjoy 2 channel listening but they do a pretty good job.
Spotify I haven't messed around with yet, has anyone done a comparison between the 2?
What is everyone using as your streaming player? I have 4 , I have Heos , Sonos Port, Bluesound Node and an Apple TV. All 4 have their advantages and disadvantages.
The Sonos Port supports 24/48 so Spotify will play full Rez. Apple Music is a much higher in 24/192 which Sonos doesn't support it. Bluesound supports 24/192 but doesn't have Apple Music. The Apple TV supports 24/48 so you can't go full Rez Apple Music there either. Heos supports 24/192 but also doesn't have Apple Music.
All that is stupid to me. I have access to Autonomic, I don't own one but I could easily pick one up it supports 24/192 but also doesn't have Apple Music.
So the ONLY way I can truly hear Apple Lossless in all in glory would be to hook up an Apple Computer with an external DAC. This isnt' out of the question, A Mac mini is what we used years ago and got away from it as it wasn't that popular.Dan

This is what AI told me about it.Spotify Lossless offers a subtle but welcome fidelity boost over its standard quality, bringing clearer highs and better dynamics for those with good wired gear, but it's limited to CD-quality (16-bit/44.1kHz), falling short of competitors' "hi-res" options (24-bit/192kHz) and often goes unnoticed on Bluetooth/casual systems, making it a nice upgrade within Spotify's ecosystem rather than a reason to switch from true high-resolution services like Tidal or Qobuz. While it's a genuine lossless (FLAC) stream, hardware limitations and Spotify's inherent processing (like volume normalization) mean truly discerning ears might still find other platforms superior, though for most users, it's a good, free upgrade.Dan

Streamed through a Blue Node Spotify didnt impress, Tidal is better so the big wait for Spotify was for nothing.Home Theater
