Sony UDP-X800M2 Issues

So..., last night I was watching a BD and had to pause it for a few minutes. All of the sudden I hear this sound through the speakers (like a constant brown noise but deeper). As I looked at the TV screen it said "SONY" in white letters and wouldn't respond. The drawer worked but that was it. Remote has no effect. Unplugging for over 10 minutes, then overnight, has had no effect. I pushed the power button for 10 seconds, like the manual states, to no effect. It just sits there with the Sony logo and the green light for the power button. It won't do anything but the stupid drawer for the disc works.

Has anyone else had this sort of issue and resolved it? I've searched the internet and while many have had this issue I couldn't find any solution. One person even stated that Sony support pretty much said F-off, but was nice about it. If I could check the firmware/updates and settings I would but all I can get is Sony on the screen.

If it's toast that would suck as it's only three years old. My old Yamaha Aventage BD-A1010 was retired only because it wouldn't play DVD's anymore. It would, however, play BD's. Funny, the Yammi was 10 years old when I took it out. Looks like I'll put it back in to see if it still works, for now.

As a side note/question - what players are good anymore or all they all junk after a short time? Please no comments on the media format. I could care less about streaming every single thing and having to pay for it when I have so much on disc.

Thank You in advance.

All the major players do not make players anymore that where great.
Pioneer Elite, Denon , Oppo are 3 that were excellent from DVD to UHD. It's a damn shame physical media is basically gone. For the entire 2024 year I think I sold maybe 4 players and I do Home Theater rooms and many media and family Room Surround systems.

No one wants them except a very small few and people are streaming their content.

As far as getting a new player? I have Sony's top end player the 1000ES from a few years ago, it works when it wants to. I didn't bother to get the 1100ES because I didn't use my 1000 much.

The X800m2 , well there isn't much choice. Oppo is gone, there is another brand like OPPO which I have no support over and they are expensive. It might be in your best interest to call Sony and see what they could do for you to repair it. If that is too much hassle , as they are not expensive, just buy another one. What other choice to you have? Hardly no one is making a nice player.

You can go Panasonic , they have a few players that are nice but they are limited in ability, no SACD and no DVD audio if that even matters.

Pay shipping and it is yours. Thanks!

They make two. Both have received pretty good reviews in my mags.

Have you tried unplugging it for awhile, like over night to see if it resets?

Pick it up 2 inches off a table and drop it. Ya never know...might do the trick.

Thanks for the replies. I did pull out the old Yamaha (made in 2011) after it sitting the box for the last three years just to see if it still worked. I'll be danged if it didn't load a BD right up, a newly released one at that. It still won't recognize DVD's but, since we bought the Sony in 2021, we have a second room with a cheap DVD player that we'll use for now for DVD's. I'm kind of surprised it still works! My wife is overjoyed, no new money spent right away.

She's ticked, as I am, that the Sony seemed to have bitten the dust so early as it was supposed to be one of the better models. I do not abuse equipment and maybe watch movies/tv shows on disc once/twice a week as time permits.

Dropping it on the table seems like a good idea as it's not working now. I might as well give it a better reason!

Thanks for the offer Eric, I'm going to use the Yamaha for now. Heck, at this point I just want to see how long it'll go. I appreciate it! BTW, didn't I send you my old NAD C542? I always wondered if you ever got it working...

I took the NAD to a local repair shop years ago and he could not fix it. No worries. I have a user manual and remote LOL.

Just a small, very uneventful, update. After still finding no answers on the web (seems everyone with this specific problem can't find any answers) I took the thing apart. Checked the disc player, greased the rails and cleaned the laser. It worked fine as I could tell. Unplugged every plug and plugged them back in. As a last ditch effort, since it won't show anything besides "SONY" on a black screen, I hooked up an ethernet cable to the back and plugged it in. I was thinking maybe the player would recognize it and update/whatever. Same stinkin' thing, black screen with the Sony logo.

So..., after three years (almost) it's a piece of junk...

[Edit: Disregard. Looks like you still have to be able to access system menus to tell it to update. I posted before reading the procedure myself.

In some equipment, with inserting USB media before powering on, the unit will detect the media and firmware, and go into the update process. Might still be worth a try.

This does sound like halting during a device power on self test failure of some component, or corrupt firmware.]

I wonder if you might be able to force a firmware reload.

Here's a link to the process for manual update using a USB thunb drive.
