What happened to the price of plywood?

Going to dual subs in my HT has necessitated the need to build a new (smaller) rack for my gear. So I head down to Home Depot to grab a sheet of 3/4” oak plywood. I bought a sheet about a year ago for a different project, and remember paying about $45…

Well - my sheet for this project ran me NINTY-EIGHT DOLLARS…! That’s right, $98. Unbelievable.

I thought about that, but a couple things come to mind -

    1. I’m in Utah,
    2. OSB prices seem to only be up about 20% or so.
    3. Oak plywood is NOT a fast mover - I doubt they sell a unit a month.

Plywood around here has been super high for a long while now, since covid and has not came down.

Plywood isn't the only wood that's obscenely expensive. I built a new equipment rack last winter and just the unfinished birch butcher block alone was over $800.

There are only a few lumber companies controlling the vast majority of the lumber market.

For plywood, the largest producer is Georgia-Pacific. Guess where they are based? 😬

Home Depot’s supplier is Columbia Forest Products. Would you like to venture a guess where they are based?

    Yup… North Carolina.

Wrong, they are both based in Georgia.

Don’t want to nit pick, but the corporate headquarters of Columbia FP are in Greensboro, NC.

They do have multiple production locations for plywood, including NC, VA, and WV. It’s certainly possible that production and transportation from production sites could have been severely disrupted due to Helene.

As for who they “support”… well everyone can draw their own conclusions. 😬

After the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac 2008 housing market debacle, that also crushed the NC Hickory/Winston Salem area….what did you expect.

He would if he had actually won in 2020. COVID caused a lot of the issues. It's a global economy and the inflation is higher in most of the world.

He certainly didn't make things any better, with the policies he put in place, he made it much worse.
