Wyred 4 Sound STP-SE Preamp

Anyone have any feedback on W4S gear, in particular their STP-SE pre?

I don’t think that pre gets enough attention IMHO, well not around these parts anyway. I love it, I still have mine, but it has been put away since I acquired the Cary SLP-05. I still have the DAC-2 and the Mono Block amps SX-1000’s as well, all of which is in storage as well.

The amps are nice, but you can do better. The one nice thing about them is you won’t throw out your back moving them, LOL..

IMO their DAC’s, and that Pre Amp is W4S’s star points..

Their customer service is top notch as well, great people to deal with, one thing that Cary could take from them IMO..

I really like mine. It's a very revealing preamp. The volume control is super precise, but some people don't like the clicking relays. It has a pretty good range of passive volume control before any gain is added. Lots of "professional" reviews out there. It is hard to go wrong for the price (used). You would have no problem reselling if it didn't gel with your system. Don't over pay for one though. Price used should be $1000 or less.

It certainly looks like a dynamite piece! HT bypass is a must though. I can't tell by looking at the inputs if it has that capability.

Mine blew up awhile back. I really liked it but just upgraded to a Michi P5.

Big step up in depth, detail, soundstage and precision.

"Blew Up?" There's not much to go wrong that isn't easily fixable unless it was something in the logic chip.

By "blew up" I mean I was walking out the door one day and suddenly the system made this awful feedback-type sound and before I could race back inside to turn it off the whole system went down and the preamp wouldn't turn on.

I opened up the unit and it had a different, but distinctive burned-electronics-smell. I couldn't find anything obviously burnt/failed like a capacitor or board.

So, I replaced the fuse, hoping that maybe it blew and did its job protecting the power side, but it still wouldn't turn on.

I thankfully had a small Cambridge integrated to get me by for a while until I settled on the Michi. Then I found a great deal on an open-box unit. It offers so much connectivity, plus a great sound.

At this point it's just boxed up in my office and I'm deciding what to with it.

    Thanks,
    Wes

You might want to check with EJ at Wyred and see what their repair rates are like. They might also pay you for it (as-is), fix it, and then sell it from their website.

    Will do! Thanks!

When I called them to get the fuse size, they seemed annoyed. It was almost impossible to read on the factory fuse.

I would have just asked them to send me one, all my dealings with W4S were always top shelf.
They were great guys to talk to at RMAF back in the day as well.

These days, you might get better service from an email rather than a call, especially with a small company like Wyred.
