I have a separate amp and pre-amp system. Got a good condition Polk Audio DSW Pro model powered sub. Any idea how to connect? The manual doesn't have instructions for my set up. I know this is basic...Thanks!

Which model number? You should have binding posts on the sub amp. Yes or no?

Which model preamplifier and power amplifier are you using? This will indicate if it has a filtered sub-out or not.

Speaker cable out from amp to the speaker in side of the binding posts. You can do one of two ways.
1. just run extra speaker cable to the sub from the outputs on the amp. If you use banana plugs now on the speaker cable going to the speakers currently in use, you will need spades on the amp out side cable going to the sub. The sub side you can used bare wire, spades or bananas to install cables on sub. Adjust the sub XO crossover to blend with current speakers.
2. You could also just run your current cables into the sub and new cable from the sub out to your current speakers, you'll still need to adjust the sub XO to blend with speakers. -

That should be a good sounding combination. You would want to follow this from the Polk owner's manual:
It shows a line level connection from the preamp's outputs going to the corresponding line level inputs on the subwoofer. Then line level from the subwoofer's outputs to the corresponding line level inputs on the power amplifier. The "LFE yes/no" switch on the subwoofer is set to "no".
