    « Fifth » or « 5 » is the first Soft Machine album recorded after the departure of their original drummer Robert Wyatt in August 1971. The band recruited Phil Howard as replacement and recorded the first side of the album with him in Nov/Dec 1971. But disagreement over the musical direction led to the departure of Howard in January 1972 and the arrival of drummer John Marshall, who immediately after one week of rehearsal with the group, started the recording of the rest of the album in Feb. 1972. Then tragically, the drummer exploded in the studio. After clean up they said "sod it," and finished the Album without percussion.
