I was at a shop this weekend the salesman told me most new systems are going with more opticals than dig-coax. He told me when it comes lenghts he said optical is better due to the bends in the coax makes the sound hit the walls and lose quality....how true is this and why are recevier companies making more optica inputs than coax ?

Wierd....I was in CC the other day and was told the opposite:confused:

He said that Sony in particular is moving away from the optical on their dvd's and receivers because, according to him, the optical output makes it easier to copy dvds. He also pointed out that Sony has a financial interest in this because they are also a big dvd and movie production company....Go figure...

However the others are still using opticals and many of them....can this hurt Sony?

People are making vast generalizations with their limited amount of knowledge.

"If brand X is doing it, then the other thousands of brands must be doing it too!"

    Bottom line,
Don't worry about which way one or the other.Buy what your system can support and forget the rest. One isn't better then the other. It's nearly impossible to hear the difference between 2 good digital cables.Believe me I have tried many times.

Again whatever your system is terminated for,use it and just buy the highest quality cables you can afford.

I don't perfer one over the other for any reason.I gave up on that a long time ago.

I have been looking for a new DVD player and they are ALL getting rid of Optical and having only Coax connections. I was surprized myself. Kind of ticked because all my Digital cables are Optical.
Many higher end models will keep both......but other than that not'a.

Same here. That's how I got into the conversation about optical connections w/ the guy in CC. It's appears that many dvd companies, including Sony, are not offering the optical outputs (especially in lower priced models), yet many receiver manufacturers are loading up on the optical connections? Other than Sony's alleged reason, according to the sales guy at CC....I wonder about the reasoning for the manufacturing difference between optical and dig coax.

I thinking coax is much cheaper to manufacture.

Another interesting thing is when I bought my first DVD player - which was the first Pioneer fresh on the market. It only had Optical and no Coax as well as many fo the first generation units.
Figure that out......... I have been watching the Digital Cable market reverse for about 5 years now...........
While most people have not even noticed.;)
