Finally a dedicated listening room.....

I didn't want to say too much until the final details were ironed out. As you may know my Mom passed away about a year and a half ago after fighting a long illness and my dad passed away suddenly at the end of January. My brother and I are the sole heirs to the estate.
We have been spending the past 3 months first organizing a memorial service and second going through the estate. My parents collected a lot of personal art from their travels and/or local art shows, etc. Going through everything has been a herculean task. My parents were not hoarders and were very organized. But, in the 60+ years they were together lots of things were accumulated.
My dad also ran his business out of the house. He was a mechanical engineer by trade and about 20 years ago started his own one person consulting and designing business. Taking on only the jobs he was interested in. He actually has (3) patents that generate a royalty each month.
We've finally been through everything including his home office. We've kept what we wanted to keep and finally signed a contract with an estate sale business to help us liquidate all that's left, which is still a lot.
The house is paid for and since my brother has no interest in the property, I have decided to buy his 1/2 out and move in. My house is a smallish house that my long term girlfriend and I have outgrown.
The good news is the basement is partially exposed and fully finished. There's my dad's large office, a full bath, a bar and a generous seating area. This will be my man cave and a rather largish dedicated listening room. To say I'm excited is an understatement. I can set up and swap more gear much more easily and I'll have a listening area to retreat to. In the past my rigs have always been front and center in the main living room sharing time and space and really only listened to when she was out.
This is also part of the reason I've been assembling a new rig and why all the new pieces I have are still sitting in their boxes. I pretty much knew this was going to be a strong possibility. I wasn't sure how it was going to pan out, but I won't have a mortgage. The gf and I have been out looking at new furniture, etc.

Please accept my sincere condolences on your parents passing, it truly is a herculean task even when they try to make it easier on the survivors.
Congratulations on the new space. Maybe once you get settled we can have a little get together with us locals. I would really love to hear your rig. -
Thanks Ivan. It's never easy and even at 58 years old, I still can't believe I no longer have parents. We are/were a close family and until my Mom got real sick we did Sunday dinner at their place for as far back as I can remember.
I will at some point have a gathering for locals. That's one thing I used to do occasionally and I do miss it. We like minded fools are few and far between. No one else but an "audiophile" really understands this hobby and it's pursuits for audio bliss.

Sorry to hear both parents are gone, I know how it feels and even after all this time sometimes still, for just a moment, want to pick up the phone and call them. To say we miss our parents is an understatement for sure.
But they would most likely be happy to know the home is still in the family and congrats on finally getting the listening room you've wanted. It will make a world of difference I'm sure.Yep, my name really is Bob.

Very sorry for your loss. It's never easy when it concerns matters of the heart. 60+ years of marriage speaks volumes about your parents devotion. Condolences and congratulations all in the same thread. Sorry to hear of your parents passing, but it’s nice to know that you guys had a great relationship and they left things on great order for you. Sounds like a really good deal that you’ll be able to move in and keep the house in the family. The fact that you’ll get a dedicated room is just a bonus.Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.-John Wooden

It's amazing what lovers of (fill in the blanks) can accumulate over a long and loving life. I feel for you brother. I often wonder, as a parent of a single child, what will I leave for her to deal with when I'm gone. But, it seems your parents enjoyed their life and had hopes that at least you would be able to enjoy their hard work long after they're gone. Enjoy.

Sorry about the loss of your parents. Someone once told me you don’t know what it’s like to feel alone on this earth until your parents are gone. I haven’t felt that feeling yet, but for the past year or more I’ve been moving my folks into assisted living (which included an estate and home sale), plus dealing with liquidating my FIL’s estate since he passed away last May, so I can relate to that part. Rough times, no doubt.
Glad to hear you and your brother have worked things out amicably as family disagreements are something else we are dealing with on the FIL’s side. Talk about taking a bad deal and making it worse.
Best of luck with the furniture shopping and outfitting the new listening room! It sounds like a sweet man cave for you to further your enjoyment of our hobby in! May the music get you through the hard times, as it has for me.

Sorry for your loss. End of January was not very long ago, so you guys must have been very efficient in cleaning-out the house. It took us a couple of years to handle my parents' house.
I hope your girlfriend can handle not seeing you very often once your listening room is done"This may not matter to you, but it does to me for various reasons, many of them illogical or irrational, but the vinyl hobby is not really logical or rational..." - member on Vinyl Engine

We've taken/set aside what we want to keep. We are honestly relying on the estate sale to sell most everything. I don't know if that's realistic. We will donate what's left. We may still have some work ahead of us if too many things are left from the estate sale.

My sincere condolences on the loss of your parents. My mother passed in 2022, I was the PR, my youngest brother bought her home. There are countless things to do. I had a great attorney friend
that was exceptional in explaining and filing everything.
I glad you're excited and ready to make that basement your space! -
Sorry for your loss. My Dad passed away not too long ago.

Sorry for your loss. Prayers out to you. I missed this thread. Because, I lost my mother May 8, 2019 & every year about this time & mother's day I seem to be down. I completely understand... Congratulations on your next move. It's always tons of fun moving huh. Don't over due yourselves. Wish you the best on your mancave & setting up all your gear that's been waiting...
