FREE Phase Linear stereo in New Mexico

Hello All,
What I have up for offer is a Phase Linear stereo set-up that was made for black vinyl. The following pieces of equipment are included:

Phase Linear 400b Power amp
Phase Linear 4000 pre-amp
Phase Linear 8000 turntable

Here is the story. My Mother recently died and me and my wife decided to clean out our house real good and get rid of everything that we are not using. This whole stereo is in very good condition, but it has not been used for a couple of years. The whole set-up is made specifically for vinyl, the pre-amp has a lot of features that are designed to augment vinyl listening and is probably useless for any digital source. The power amp is huge and heavy and puts out 200 watts per channel. The real gem of this system is the turntble. The turntable is huge and heavy, it is about 16" X 16" and weighs over 45 pounds. This turntable is a lateral tracking turntable and it is simply stunning. I want to give this whole stereo to a vinyl addict because I want the pieces to stay together simply because I am the original owner and these pieces have always been together. I want this stereo to go to a vinyl addict because the stereo as a whole was designed for vinyl playback.


The catch is that this stereo has to be picked up at my house, I will not ship it. The turntable is a huge and heavy antique (I bought it new in 1980 for $850) that has never been abused. There is no guarentee as far as this set-up's condition, but it is all in cosmetically good shape. Like I said, I haven't really played it for a couple of years.

One further catch. This stereo is almost free. I will trade the whole stereo for one very CD, a good gold CD or a nice SACD. Even a used CD will do if it is a very desirable title.

Please post here if you are interested in this stereo. I am in New Mexico, about 30 miles south of Albuquerque, and the stereo is currently packed away in a box. I have all of the original owner's manuals as well.

TRM - I just read this thread, previously thinking it was simply for some free gear to the gang...it was much more than that. I am very sorry to hear of your loss, and hope that you are doing well.

Learn from his action Polkies. Even in a time of heartache, this man STILL continues to give back to our community; furthermore, he is what some would consider a newbie, and I would be one of those people. I've been really wanting to look at some TT gear and wonder if you'd consider a relative newbie having a crack at it. I'm about 8 hours away I guess (depending on Mapquest) and would be interested.....

Thank you all for your very kind words and thoughts. My Mom moved in with me about a year ago when it seemed as if the end was near, so me and my family have some very pleasent memories of the last days of her life.

Brett, sorry no pictures man but like you said, I am only about 8 hours away so it shouldn't be a big waste, even if you don't like it. But I am telling you, this turntable is awsome. When I had it spinning I was using a specially modified television stand to hold it because of the extremely large size and extra heavy weight. But of course it is a lateral tracking turntable, and I really don't even know if this style turntable is in vouge anymore. Just email me at:

The race is on. To tell you all the whole story, before I posted this offer here I posted this ofer over at the Steve Hoffman forum, where I also hang around. Well I got no responses over there, so I posted the offer here. Well it seems that last night there has been offer from a member of each forum, both from people in Pheonix. I really don't care which one of the two gets this stereo, but I am open to somebody stopping by on the 4th of July to pick it up, or even sooner if the winner can arrange it. Everybody has my email address, so I will just wait to see who makes arrangements first.

I'm heading out to CA this week again on business, so the absolute earliest that I could make a trip out there would be next Saturday or Sunday.

In the world of turntables, I don't know what lateral tracking means. What's the difference between something like that and any other version? Skuul me.......;)

The Phase Linear 8000 turntable has a perfectly straight tonearm that moves on a track. A normal turntable has a tonearm that has a slight angular bend, and the tonearm pivots from a fixed location. This fixed point tonearm turntable is called a radial tonearm, and because the tonearm pivots from a fixed point there is a slight variation between the angle of the needle in relationship to the groove of the disc at the beginning of the disc, compared to the angle of the needle in the groove of the disc in the middle of the disc or at the end of the disc. My lateral tracking turntable has a perfectly straight tonearm that moves along the groove as the record plays, thus the tonearm is always at a 90 degree angle to the groove at all points during record playback. The tonearm can be moved by a "steering wheel" that is connected to a computer chip, and during playback the tonarm is guided by a laserbeam that directs the computer chip to send an electromagnetic signal to the track that hosts the tonearm. The whole mechanism of the tonearm motion is guided by an electromagnetic motor so that the grooves of the record do not directly move the tonearm along its path, but the size of the groove is detected by the laser mechanism that sends a signal to move the tonearm electromagnetically.

This is very similar in analogy to the gas pedal on a new Bently. The gas pedal on the Bently does not mechaniaclly connect to the fuel system, the gas pedal on the Bently is connected to a computer that sends an electrical signal to the fuel system. It is complicated but by avoiding all mechanical connection, the records last longer and the playback is more accurate. Or so the theory went back when lateral tracking tonearms were in vouge.

As a little note to this lateral tracking tonearm turntable. I am personally only aware of 4 models of lateral tracking turntables ever being made, and they were all very expensive. As I originally posted, I paid $850 for this turntable in 1980, but I got a good deal from Phase Linear dealer because I bought all of my Phase Linear equipment from him. This turntable listed for $1,200 back in 1980, which would be equivilant to about $2,000 for a turntable today.

The only thing that would be interesting to know is why more units weren't made with that technology and it's been left by the wayside....i mean, if all others are using the other fixed point arms, there can't be that much bad about them, right?

Maybe the idea of a lateral tracking tonearm is a novelty, but the idea of the needle always being at a 90 degree angle to the groove as compared to varying between 87.5 degrees and 92.5 degrees (as a radial tracking tonearm does) is a good idea.

I've got an old Sony turntable that my Dad bought back in the mid-80's and it's got the lateral tracking tonearm as well. The front panel says "Biotracer/Linear Tracking" and "Stereo Turntable System PS FL77." I never noticed that it is any different from any of the other turntables out there. Did Sony make one of the four models that you are aware of? I was actually thinking about buying a new turntable, but maybe the one that I have is better than I think?

There have been various lateral TT's over the years and still are a number of new lateral tracking TT's to be had. IMO, it's the best design and if I was anywhere near Rocky I would have jumped at his offer. I use to have one of the Sony PS FL77II lateral tracking TT's, which was the best they made. I believe Sony made 4 versions of a lateral TT.
