I’m sure they are working as fast as they can at these facilities. Just not enough people or the proper infrastructure to account for the holiday uptick in shipments

The route of my latest USPS shipment. Left Memphis, TN Saturday. It is currently in Des Moines, IA. It would have been closer to take it there from Kansas City, MO when it was there on Tuesday morning, but in the USPS's infinite wisdom, it had to go back across the state to Hazlewood, before it could go to Des Moines.

Assuming its next stop is my mailbox in IL, it'll have traveled 1,300 miles over 5+ days. Memphis is 445 miles (6 hours) from me. Brilliant.

Is it any wonder why the cost of stamps is increasing again?

Kind of hard to believe they don't have any trucks going straight down 55.

Currently awaiting a package from UPS that should have been here yesterday.....switched to today.

Trust me when I say that the USPS doesn't want first class mail anymore, that is the reason for the stamp increases. Their plan is to keep increasing until people stop using it. They want to be the delivery company of all the UPS, Amazon and FedEx ground stuff.

If you ask them this at the PO, they will most assuredly point to the picture of the President. At least, that's always been the answer they gave me. As if they gave a flyin' ****.

This must be location dependent or something. It’s been years since I had a terrible experience with USPS. They almost always get stuff to me when they say they will, and sometimes earlier.

Just wait until Lewis DeJoy decides to 'update' your area with newer, larger, more centralized, distribution centers. The Atlanta area was one of the 1st to go through his upgraded (ie cheaper to operate) modern facilities, and we have had late/disappearing mail issues that go back 6+ months. The new "Palmetto" facility became known as the place where mail goes to disappear for 2 weeks. They are slowly getting things back to normal, but I still have mail that takes way longer to arrive compared to years ago. Movie rentals from GameFly take 7+ days to arrive in my mailbox (Pittsburgh to Atlanta). Returns take longer. I've had two movies completely never arrive. Back when Netflix was operating their disc service, I could get 6 movies in a month (1 out at a time). With current mail delays (and perhaps a less optimized distribution network), I haven't been able to get more than 2 in a month from GameFly.

Is that the guy who got rid of a bunch of older processing machinery without having new stuff in place? If so, I think he's the reason I had records sitting in DC for 5 weeks a couple/few years ago. I'd have uppercut him in the **** if I met him.

I feel your pain after the debacle with the amp I shipped to CA. I generally defend the shipping services because the percentage of on-time deliveries is really great, but sometimes you just have to scratch your head.

Yeah, I have a turntable, or what's left of a turntable, making the journey to from the east coast to Atlanta and back again twice while going through numerous distribution centers along the way, including the notorious Palmetto Georgia facility twice. Im sticking with FedEx Ground or UPS moving forward.

We have a USPS affiliated employee or two on the forum who might be able to have some people slapped around.

Lol, wouldn't do any good. I'm recently retired after a 36+ year career (been a year now). First off, the unions are too good, it's extremely difficult to get lead weights fired, unless caught stealing.

And, with as large as USPS is, the variety of people employed there, well, let me just say, Men in Black have it correct.

And yes, mail does move slower now and with a level of irony you wouldn't expect. I started in '85 when "we" were a manual operation with some machines like the: LSM, letter sorting machine and flat sorting machine however you had employees keying them in.

I think around sometime in the '90's, the move to highspeed machinery came in, barcode imprinter, barcode reader. The clerk just dumped the tray of mail on the ledge, the machine did the rest. Pros: mail moves at light speed, no clerk making key-in mistakes. Cons: letters get shredded to pieces, mail flies off belts and hides under equipment, mail gets derailed and lands in another tray and is now missent.

Now, once the mail reaches it's final station of destination, some stations are really on the ball, stations that work well together but.....that's become a rare jewel, too many employes are lazy, slow, entitled and lean on the union to allow them to skate and skirt their tasks.

I had the privilege of being in a position to train window clerks and lead window clerks, then moved up the chain and worked with supervisors, teaching them how to work some of the newer retail software. In both of those areas, I was able to share "my" leadership style which was, share and suggest, never barking like a boss, and in the postal service, there are TOO many of the wrong people in the wrong positions of leadership.

Anyway, that's my rant, I had a good run but glad to be away from it....

    Geoff,
Thanks for the insight. It is sad that the union creates a place where workers can be marginal or sub-standard. They were created with some good intentions, but where they have ended up is not great.

I've been lucky to have had only 2 USPS drivers. One mailman and a mail lady now for the past 30 years.

Both are career postal workers. The man is retired years ago. The mail lady will retire soon.

They've driven HOT ( in the summers ) mail trucks almost every day they've worked. Some times their trucks would have BALD tires on them! CRAZY.

Both have LOVED their pay and only have some complaints and that had to do with what you said.

    Bad management at times.

But both have kept a GREAT attitude and joyful persona every day I greeted them at the road at times.

When they had replacement drivers when they were off, those people didn't even smile much when greeted.

Our local USPS office counter workers have had GREAT attitudes. Those people are truly special people. Keeping a great persona dealing with every kind of situation is amazing.

I'm here in Wilm. NC.. My street uses the Oleander Rd. Branch. Mostly great people.

Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

I agree the people that work the USPS are saints to say the least. Some of the dumbest effen questions I have heard in my life have come from customers at the counter. My favorite it 'can you tape up my box and help me fill out this paperwork''!?!. Have that jazz ready before you show up at the PO people.

Just to close the loop on this latest debacle, my package was delivered this past Saturday. I have no issues with the fine USPS folks on the ground who are doing what they are told, but the ones that decide to have a package travel 1,600+ miles and 6+ days to go 450 miles and 6 hours? Yes. I dislike those people. A lot.

That's good to hear. There are many good folks working for USPS in spite of the continuous political BS that's ever present.

I had the privilege of working the counter for many years, LOVED it! In case no one could tell, I'm a bit of an extrovert and as sarcastic as they come, I got paid to mess with customers, the bigger my audience, the bigger my performance, and by some great miracle, they received it well and like Duncan Hinze, they'd always come back for more LOL. One of my greatest compliments, and sad as it is, would be when a customer would say, "You're not a REAL postal employee, are you?" I reply with, Why, because I don't have control issues, I'm not in a race with a slug for last place, I'm not bitter and angry??? And every time they's say, Yeah!!!

There were some good times on that counter. I love working customer service, I'd do it again.
