Thanks for the well wishes but I really recovered rather quickly. My wife not so much. She's finally starting to feel better though.

The ears are definitely up to the task!!

Tequila does not have a worm! Cheap mezcals do, but again...cheap.

Anyone know why the worm was included in Mezcal?

There's a liquor store near me but they only package it together with a $100+ Patron product for $200+. :'(
Another place near me wanted blanco for $100.

Regarding the worm thing: from what I've read, it was almost an accident to begin with. Those worms (technically, moth larvae) are often in agave plants, and ended up in a bottle at one point. The distiller, perhaps covering his arse, said it enhanced the flavor of the mezcal. After that, it was really just a marketing gimmick. But as previously mentioned, no artisanal mezcalero these days puts a worm in his product. If you see a worm, it will likely be in some mass-produced garbage mezcal. I actually have a bottle of mezcal with a scorpion in it :s

Side note: there is one form of mezcal called 'pechuga', where they hang a cleaned, butchered chicken inside the still to give it a 'special' taste.

I wanted a couple of bottles for my daughter's wedding in Chicago last month, but even the caterer couldn't get any. After going to about a dozen liquor stores, I found one bottle of blanco for $199.99, and one anejo for $299.99 :o I just shook my head and left them behind. During our drive back home to Nashville a few days later, we stopped at probably 20 stores in Indiana and Kentucky, but couldn't find a single bottle.

Two years ago, it was easy to find the blanco for $50 here in Nashville. Now? None anywhere. Luckily, I have a few bottles of the still strength, and anejo, stashed in my collection. I hate to open them, though, because my wife and I can easily finish a bottle of tequila in one night...like last night...but it was a vintage El Tesoro B)

Jody, it was said the worm was added in the beginning to show the bottle had the correct alcohol content to preserve the worm. Lesser quality alcohol would allow the worm to disintegrate. So if you shook the bottle in the worm fell apart you knew the bottle wasn't up to snuff.

I was never a mezcal fan anyway, artisanal or not it does not hit my palate politely 😉

Would love to, but it's not available in my market. Looks like it's almost exclusively sold in TX, since the founders are in DFW, with a connection to the open-air 'flea' market. While searching the name, I discovered that soccer player Lionel Messi's nickname is 'la pulga' (the flea) due to his short stature.

Ivan, I read that explanation as well. There appear to be a few different theories of how it began. Yeah, mezcal has a smoky taste due to the cooking process, and it throws some people off. The cool thing is that several different varieties of agave can be used for mezcal, creating different flavor profiles. Tequila is limited to just the one variety of agave - Blue Weber Agave (a.k.a., Agave Azul, or Agave Tequilana). Salud!
