I had a Polk PSW505. Its a very good sub but it didn't shake the couch like the PB2 does.No Kids Allowed

Scott,
I've been running my PB2-ISD in the forward firing driver mode since day one of getting it last Fall. Tom Vodhanel suggested this way to me also. I didn't reinsert the screws, but I did plug the screw holes so they're air tight. The main reason for this configuration for me was to create a smaller footprint so the subwoofer would go in the best corner of the room. A benefit was tighter controlled bass because the room the subwoofer is in sits over a garage. Mine works better with this configuration in this particular room. The drivers do look pretty cool, even though the ISD drivers only have foam surrounds. The Plus drivers would look even better.
I've also had the subwoofer in a room with a concrete floor and couldn't tell a difference between forward firing and downfiring in that room. I'd also recommend sticking with the conventional configuration in this type of situation because the subwoofer was designed this way. If you do choose to run the subwoofer with the ports up, I'd suggest using something to de-couple the subwoofer from the floor so it's not sitting flat on what should be the subwoofer's front. -
Emlyn, thanks for the info buddy. I may try both configurations eventually. Nice to hear from you. Man those drivers would look great blasting forward.

Damit Scott...... reading this post is getting me anxious for you to get it . I'm looking forward to hearing your impressions. I know you have been looking at them for a while now and you finally did it. Be prepared and forwarned that you will spend alot of time in front of the TV and listening to stereo.

Ditto.
(sigh) I TOLD you to stay on top of BAX. Ya gotta check home voice mail ON THE HOUR if you are at work. Now ya done gone and missed a whole friggin' day - shame on you. Keep us in suspense why don't you?
Emlyn:
I would carefully reinsert those screws because they will hold the female anchors tight. With nothing to put them under tension, the vibes will eventually work them loose and they will fall out inside the enclosure, only to be recovered by pulling drivers (no fun)."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

Thanks as usual for the good advice Dr. Spec. -

Ohhhh yes! Fun isn't it??
My wife calls me an "audio geek." She see's me walking around the room with a meter and funny humming sounds coming out of the speakers, spreadsheet and pen in hand....and just laughs....:D

Scott what happened buddy, you put your back out and can't get to your computer lugging that around? Or do you have the dreaded SVS pettin PP sindrom?
Dave -
Thanks Steve, Dave and Spec - you guys crack me up!!!:D
The movers are actually contracted by BAX and they helped me bring it inside the house without even getting bribbed.
Very impressive packageing - not even a single dent or tear on the box. High quality dence foam all around the sub. The black finish is better in person than on the internet.
Seemless edges and flawless intergration of the amp. No ugly cooling fins poking out the back because of its digital capabilities.
You can actually get a good look at the subs by peaking between the base plate and the box. The woofs look amazing. I bet at full excursion they almost touch the base plate. SWEET!
DEEP, LOUD and CLEAN that is what it is all about. The psw 1200 held its own in the 30 to 50 area but not even close when the PB2 starts to flex its 900 watts of muscle. I have never heard bass this deep and clean before. It takes getting use too. The corner directly across from the sub seems to be a bit dead and I had the same problem in my other HT room both are rectangle in shape. I will be getting a larger house in a few months and this sub will be fun to intergrate. The Haunting DTS seems to be my favorite with this sub at the monent. The bass gets low enought I can hear only the air and woofers fluttering.
Reciever is set a -8 and SVS at 1/3 of gain. Amazing - the power this sub has at these setting. Thanks to everyone that has inspired me to make this purchase. This is a well built product that going to last for many years to come.
This monster does not look out of place to me! -
Congrats Scott. Killer looking setup. I tend to second guess purchases at times... except for my purchase of my SVS PB1+. I bought it and never looked back. I can't ever imagine needing more. I run mine at 11:00 o'clock on the gain and it delivers. It is amazing the power, grunt, and finesse that these things have.

Ahh....another satisfied owner. (thumbs up)
What tune (port config and tune switch setting) are you running, Scott?
The Haunting has "some" infrasonics that will benefit from the 20 Hz tune, but the 25 Hz tune will do justice to 98% of The Haunting.
The 25 Hz tune will really clobber the room on the Coming Mother door knocks and the Hugh Crane footsteps crushing through the ceiling.
"The Cold" has a 22 Hz note that is very impressive in the 25 Hz tune, too.
Glad you are digging the SS396 of the SVS line-up; it's a real bruiser."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

Thanks for all your help Doc. I am running all ports open with SS set to 25hz. I will try the 20hz tune later.
SS396 you say?
What is the "break in" hours on this SVS? The woofs seem to be pliable and quick already........ -

Yeah, Chevy's muscle car from the 60's. :cool:What is the "break in" hours on this SVS? The woofs seem to be pliable and quick already........
SVS doesn't put much weight into the concept. Run it hard out of the box and don't worry about it."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

I'm glad your happy with your purchase, I had little dought you wouldn't be. I still get a thrill from mine as I'm sure you will yours. Give the SVS a workout and I have no You will be the one getting the workout . Congrats on the sub and get busy on the referance movies and report back with the diffrences between the two subs.
EDIT: nice set-up too still have the "center on steroids" going, I might like to try that so you might get a request for how to sometime if thats ok.
Congrats bud

Anytime DAVE!!!:)

Scott - try the Underworld soundtrack, cut #5 - Renholder's "Now I Know". It has a wicked deep synth bass line through the entire track - centered at 23 Hz (it's perfect for the 25 Hz tune). Crank it up and feel the PB2+ OWN the room."What we do in life echoes in eternity"

so...the real question is............has she let you off the couch yet?
Some advice....
- adjust each knob very slightly, it makes a big difference. I was turning my level knob about a 1/16" and it made an audible difference on my 25-31PC+
- you'll probably find yourself backing off the level knob after a few days
- as tedious as it is, take the time to plot and measure the effects of each setting change; remember changing one setting will probably effect other settings
- It will sound/measure differently after break-in, so you may want to "rough" it in until you've got about 2 weeks on it, then do your measurements.
- Change only 1 setting at time, then measure. You'll run yourself crazy if you try to adjust multiple knobs.
- Stealing one from Doc Spec, make sure everything is kept "constant." If you have all windows closed when measuring, make sure you do the same thing next time. Same with doors, position of the sub, etc. You're trying to eliminate the variables as much as possible when calibrating.
I did the following, in order:
1. Set the filter to stock tune
2. Set x-over at a "best guess" spot
3. Set the level on 2 1/2 lines up from minimum
4. Set Phase at 0 degrees
Then I measured to first see if I had a "cross-over hole" at the crossover point.
I adjusted and measure crossover until I had the flattest wave I could get. Then I played with the phase to remove any nulls, again adjusting, then measuring each point (leaving all else untouched) and then selected the best waveform from that series of tests. Then I finally adjusted the level based on CD's with heavy bass material to get rid of the "pluminess."
When it was all done I did a final plot just to verify I was getting the best waveform possible for the room. Exhausting? hell ya, but well worth the effort.
