Math is a global, if not universal, language. There are basic rules and standards for its use and interpretation that make it work the same for everyone.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go divide some Schiit by zero and see what happens.

Look, you can use the fuzzy math all you want but in every logical circuit design, the multiplication operator associated with the parenthesis gets operated on first because of it's association with the parenthesis. The division comes second because the parenthesis gives the multiplication a priority bump. It's known as "multiplication denoted by juxtaposition" and it sets a higher priority than a standalone multiplcation operator.

Every computer out there including the one you are reading this on operates under that assumption for the order of operations.

The answer to the equation is 1. Not 9.
False! It's 9, but no way am I debating you!

It's more of a rules challenge rather than a math problem.
The way Emlyn wrote it makes sense for the answer of 1.
The answer of 9 would be more clearly written as
    (6÷2)(1+2)=
"The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbour to say there are twenty gods, or no god. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg." --Thomas Jefferson
  • I agree. And by not expressing it as 6 ÷ 2 x (1+2) but as 6 ÷ 2(1+2), the way I was taught it is equivalent to 6 ÷ (2(1+2)).

You do the parentheses first, then the division, because of the left to right rule, then the multiplication last, which gives you the answer of 9.

This illustrates clearly why the answer is 1….

Your answer is correct also, either answer is correct because it's not well defined.

I just skimmed a few pages online about this, since I didn't want to waste too much more of my life on it.

I have to say, I was really surprised to read that any mathematicians at all agreed to these drastically different approaches, but it's true. I've never known any different than my embarrassing Aunt Sally.

One note I read said that due to the ambiguity and problems caused by these two drastically different rule sets, whenever there's a potential conflict, the use of additional parentheses is sometimes used to clarify intent.

But I figured out a much easier method.

So, we have the equation below. If you look closely at this equation, you'll notice the amount of space between the 6, ÷, and 2, and also how the 2 is muuuuch closer to the (. Clearly the 2 prefers multiplication over division. The answer, therefore, is 1.
