Verizon cell service sucks

Verizon cell customers all over the US can't make or receive calls since Tuesday morning. Can't get through to customer service online, calling from a Wi-Fi enabled phone or land line.

Yeah, mine was jacked this evening. I didn't notice earlier today. Although... I did not receive any spam calls, either.

So much for "the best network".
I'm not sure it's been worth it for quite some time now with the improvements I'm told t-mobile/sprint has made?

I used my Google voice number for the first time this eve. Wifi calling didn't work for me.

Most other carriers have already shut down 3g service before the end of year.
I don't think I had any issues. I seldom use the cell anymore. I did get a spam
Call at about lunchtime. There's a lot more disruption ahead in telecom.
The wireline network is being dismantled. Protection for traditional telecom
services have expired, so anyone still using a landlines for alarms or faxing
will at some point have to deal with it. AT&T has stopped most maintenance
On cable, so it's currently experiencing a slow death. Expect costs to rise
And service to break. And at some point, they will pull the plug.
The close to 100 year lifespan of faxing is over. Welcome to the 21st century.

So I had att for close to decade with no issues.

I switched to spectrum at 30 a month for unlimited everything, which used Verizon and the service was pretty sub par.

A few weeks ago we switched to us mobile which also uses Verizon and the service has been equal to att, go figure. The price for their service, 3 lines is 28 a month unlimited. 4 lines is 25.

I can definitely recommend us mobile!

My Tracfone is on Verizon no issues here. My cost will embarrass you, it's less than $10 a month. With the exception of an airplane it works everywhere.

If you don't need data that's great. On average we use over 100 gigs a month so... Yeah

@sucks2beme - I don't know what service you have, but whatever it is, it should offer you free line wrapping when you type. Most carriers offer automatic line wrapping as an included service now, so you don't have to do it manually anymore. If yours is still charging for that, I'd be looking elsewhere.

    Line wrapping on a carrier?
I'm at home. I don't use a tiny cell screen and two thumbs.
Using a tablet. The Verizon cell is only for when I leave the house.
Which is almost NEVER. Or when I need that login verification.
I use a carriage return. Remember typing on that old Remington
Typewriter? Big lever on the top?

    Retired old guy.
Also used a pickup on a farm. Bench seat and rubber mat
Instead of carpet so you could rinse the mud out. Just
    Waiting around now to die.

When my inlaws retired and moved to the little town where Mrs. H & I now live, their phone was two pieces (speaker and receiver, in WE parlance) and a wooden box. To make a call, they picked up the latter, and talked to the operator through the former. Their number was "line 2, ring 2".

    That was in 1973. :#

Most of the world was still using rotary dial phones until recent years.
They went from that directly to cell service. I worked for major telecom
manufacturers for years. The days of tech lasting for decades is over.
All ip based telecom is about here. Data and voice won't be separate
services, even cell service. And there's going to be pain. That means
means throwing away old devices. And it also means the classic
Five 9's of service reliability are done as well. Good news, it costs less.
Bad news, it's not going to be as dependable. A guy with a shotgun
and a good aim can down a whole lot of customer's service.
Or even a squirrel. Don't even ask.... little troublemakers.

I used to have Verizon and never had problems. Switched to Spectrum Mobile 11/2022 which runs on Verizon and can’t tell a difference.

Must be some regional stuff going on. Hope they fix the service there.

No issues with Verizon here. Been with their service for a decade or longer. AT&T has bad service in my area.

HD calling is much clearer for me. It's especially true if both ends have it engaged.

I switched to Verizon several years ago from US Cellular because the latter had bad reception for me. Verizon was much more expensive but at first the reception seemed better. Lately, however, the reception has gotten worse and is now only slightly better than US Cellular was. The “plans” for all these providers are B.S. too. I think I need to switch again and I guess I’ll have to start looking at a better solution

I did have the displeasure of starting on a manual typewriter. then my mom got an old electric one at a thrift store one summer along with one of those foldy typing books and decided it was time I learned how to type. every morning for a few weeks...
    aaa asa aas saa saa...
iirc, that one automatically did the carriage return or you could hit the return key? whatever it was, it wasn't the Enter key. didn't old computer keyboards used to say Enter and Return?

My phone still wasn't dialing this morning. I hate HD voice, and turned it off like 5 minutes after I got my phone, which is now gracefully aged (thinking Google Pixel, but just don't want a giant phone).

Anyway, I just read that this is related to Verizon's retirement of its CDMA (3G) network.
    https://www.verizon.com/support/knowledge-base-218813/

    In short,
...if you are a Verizon customer using a 3G CDMA or 4G phone device that does not support HD Voice (Non-VoLTE), your line will be suspended without billing, and the device will no longer make/receive calls, send/receive text messages, or use data services.

So, like Jesse, I had to enable HD Voice in order to be able to make calls.
I think something's changed in its implementation, though. I just made a test call and it wasn't crunchy with too much air anymore like I remember. it was so digital-y before. I'll complain back more on this thread if I find it to be so. I've talked to @sucks2beme, and he's agreed to coach me.

Interesting Scott, I would not have thought that 4gLTE would have been affected. I never had the crunchy digital-y problem with HD
