Command bar still connected to bluetooth, but not as an audio device

I've been using my Command Bar with my computer over WiFi (also used with my TV wired, but not during the issue I am describing).
I listen to some music and it's pretty great. The album ends and if I don't start playing something else soon (uncertain on the duration, maybe 5-15 minutes), the Command Bar is no longer showing as an audio device. It remains connected over Bluetooth, but I can't use it until I tell Alexa to pair again.
Has anyone else encountered this? I know it's an older device and imagine a firmware update hasn't been made in ages.
(aside, maybe relevant: I disconnect the bluetooth, tell Alexa to pair again, and reconnect from my computer. The previous volume setting is not used, and she yells incredibly loud that it's connected to bluetooth. Even if I know it's coming, I flinch and am trying to remember to cover my ears first. My pets are very upset about this with their sensitive ears.)
I'm emailing support as well, but thought others here may be helpful as well.
