Will order some 0198's shortly. This is my first foray into vintage speakers and I am really impressed with these giant towers. They sound nicer than my $4000 B&Ws and now I'm really interested in the SDA's!

Perhaps I'm wrong but I thought that they came with SL3000 tweeters.

The tweeters should have been the SL3000, not the SL2500.

The 2500 are the replaced tweeter for the 3000 which were prone to blowing. The 2500 is a better tweeter than the 3000 and the 0198 is the latest and best version.

I don't know where you got that SL2500 and SL3000 info from, but it's completely wrong. The SL3000 was the better tweeter and was not prone to blowing.

Agree with F1. Toe away to your listening area with the 15tl's. They just need a tad bit of space in behind them for the passive. I have a 18 × 26 room so it isn't a issue... The sl3000s were a good tweeter imo BUT the 0198 are far better & worth the coin.. I also spiked mine & it improved the bass & controlled the speakers more imo

I agree, spiking the RTA made a huge improvement.

The progression of tweeters went up in number sooooo the SL2500 couldn't have been a replacement for the SL3000 since the SL2500 came out before the SL3000....but what do I know.....

    SL1000, SL2000, SL2500, SL3000........

It 100% is the replacement and the 0198 is the replacement for both the 2500 and 3000. This information was directly from Polk.

You have to understand that Polk CS is largely outsourced these days and most of them are clueless. Fortunately, we are not.

Dude I'm done arguing with you.
Many of us have been here for decades. The new Polk CS is mostly call center folks not 100% true Polk employees or better yet some were transferred from the Denon CS which is a whole other ball of wax.

I'm sorry they gave you bad info, but please some of us have a better understanding.

Yes the RD-0198 is the replacement for both BUT the SL 2500 was never the replacement for the SL3000.

  • Maybe this will help clear it up......or maybe not. Replacing a SL3000 with an SL2500 would be a downgrade. Anyways DarqueKnight's Tale of 5 Tweeters thread has great information:

"The RD0198 silk dome tweeter is the appropriate drop in replacement for the SL3000 tweeter used in the fifth generation SDA SRS series and in the RTA 15TL and RTA 11TL. The SL2500 is a cost reduced derivative of the SL3000 design. It was used in the Monitor 2 series speakers and in the RTA 8TL of the RTA series."

I really appreciate that. I have been doing a lot of experimentation with these and I do not like they way they sound toed in. The soundstage collapses and they are easily to locate. I also get listeners fatigue very quickly. I've now got them about 24" from the back wall with 7' of separation and no toe in. They are in a small 10' x 18' room and this is providing the best results. They sound really nice.

I'll agree with you on not toeing in (but not the SL2500 deal lol). I found a similar spacing to yours also works for me, but was able to go from 24" to 18" from the back wall in my current setup without any ill effects and 6' of separation. Had mine since new and never have been happy with them toed in. Betting any fatigue you may still experience goes away with the RDO-198's.
