Yeah I agree about smash burger: we had one here and I really like it. But 1. it’s too expensive to compete with true fast food, and 2. there’s no drive through, so is it fast food?

In either case, it went out of business here…

Agree with the OP that it seems they are trying to save on material costs by shrinking the patties! The Mrs and I will go every once in a while, for nostalgia, lol, but it seems we're always disappointed. I gotta learn !!!

I remember a burger chain called Mr. Quick growing up as a kid, gone now, and Dog-n-Suds, which surprisingly there are a few left out there !!!

Grew up on both Mr. Quick and A&W Root Beer stand. It was outdoor only in the summer. We also had a Dog N Suds as well it is now a Thai restaurant and has been in business about 20yrs. now.
I think we still had a Mr.Quick in central Illinois up to about 10-15 yrs ago. It was a 45 min drive from my town so obviously I didn't drive over to it. Hell I didn't even know it was there until someone mentioned that it was there and it had closed.

Always a line at Chik-fil-a in my area, but they move so fast I would rather go there, than just about any other fast food restaurant with a much shorter line. Can’t understand why so many places take so long to move only a few cars through their drive-thru.

It’s so disappointing the path things have taken…..
Cut here & cut there and you can make x amount more money.
Where does this end where people stop buying?

    What a shame.

Here’s an example my wife & I have found.
We enjoy old appliances for the kitchen, toasters, mixers etc.
We bought a Sunbeam mixer from the 40’s.
I took it apart just to clean it before we used it. What I found inside is a well built motor with two electronic pieces…. a very large resistor and a very large capacitor.
There’s a reason why it still works as new.

It’s all about building as cheap as possible, make it last long enough for a warranty to not cost a company money, then have a customer service rep tell you how sorry they are that you find the product not to be what you expected and that it wasn’t our intention to make you feel this way.

    WTF has happened?????

When big conglomerates bought everything up through merger and acquisition to eliminate competition, we lost quality through monopoly. That's why I was against the bailouts during the crash of 2008. Let them fail, someone out there will pick up the ball.

True. It’s also true that appliances cost people a lot more of their income a few decades ago than they do now. In some cases a kitchen appliance cost ten times in the 1960s or 1970s what they cost now if adjusted for inflation and income levels.

People buy cheap stuff. It is possible to buy a better more reliable thing for 30 percent more than a similar looking thing but most people take the less expensive route either not knowing better or ignoring the quality differences if they are aware of them,

Culver's here in the Midwest and Steak-n-Shake. I do like 5 Guys, but man have they gotten expensive. We also just got a Freddie's which looks similar to Culver's, but I haven't tried them yet. We have a great Food Truck Guy named 15th & Chris, burgers are off the hook.

He has a small stand also, but when it gets colder he can't utilize the "stand" as there is no indoor seating, so he parks the truck around town. His stand is on 15th street and his name is Chris. Food Network quality food truck food (burgers and fries only), but it ain't cheap & I don't mind paying...lol.

We were in the Suburbs of Chicago recently stopping at a Brewery (Mikerphone) and they had a father and daughter team called "Biker Dude Burgers", they make a smash burger than is one of the best I've had. They have a food truck, but usually set up outside with a large flat top using the food truck as "storage". I swear they sell out every time. They fill the truck to capacity with product. I'm craving one right now!

We were watching the wonder years with my daughter: a color tv in 1969 was over $400! That’s over $3200 now! I just bought an entry level 55 inch 4K tv for the deck for $380. Crazy…

Steak-n-Shake here will not be in business much longer here. They are ran with a crew of 4. They no longer have waiters and waitresses, everything is kiosk only, no cash except in the drive thru. No plates, glass or silverware. They are planting bow flags around the business saying dinning room open please come in. At lunch and dinner when it was standing room only waiting for a table, now the parking lot may have one vehicle mostly none. They've shrunk the menu by half.
Nothing like watching a business immolate itself.
I've not ate there in 3yrs or more. It's not even close to the Steak-n-Shake I grew up on.

Such a shame S & S went down a rathole. I grew up on them when it was a great burger. Went to Freddy's down in Springfield over the weekend and it was pretty decent. I'd describe their burger a cross between a S & S and a Culver burger. It's still better than the other chains.

I actually haven't eaten at one in probably a year and half. Tried to go there the other night for a quick bite. The sign outside said dining room open, but then a paper sign on the door said dining room closed, drive-thru only. Perhaps this one is suffering the same fate as those around you. I had heard about the no wait staff and sit wherever and get your own food from the kitchen counter.
