So, I'm almost ashamed of myself, but I'm gonna start an EV truck thread ;)

... but only because there's no active EV chatter on here of late.
I mean, there should be, right? Crude's goin' up, up, up... again. Real soon. ;)

OK, in seriousness, I just read an interesting-enough real-world "impression"/review of the Rivian "pickup", and I thought I'd share the link FWIW.
Oh -- I put pickup in quotes because of that 5 foot, 3 inch 4 foot, 4 inch bed. :#

As an aside... I love Curbside Classic. It is the one and only blog that I actually signed up for notifications from (there's a penalty flag thrown -- too many prepositions on the field!).

Why do they make trucks with such a small box?

You know the neat thing about those is you can pick your noise you want it to make. Unlike say some of the cars that are quiet as a church mouse. My son builds them at the plant here, I asked if they made the brake pads drag on purpose to make noise. (Well that's what it sounded like to me)
He stated there's several sounds that they can make so they are not in stealth mode.
    About time!

So the cab can be huge. Another question is why is the hood so long when there’s no engine under it.

Just read this morning that Ford is jacking up the pricing on the Lightning by $5K across the board.

I see a potential huge market for delivery vans more than for pickups. They’re usually parked overnight every night and can be fully charged up, loaded up, and ready to roll in the morning for cheap.

Because most people will only use them to “pickup” groceries or their little munchkins from school.

Long hood equals trunk from my understanding. They really are not a big truck, about the size of a Colorado, Canyon or Ranger.

The area under the front storage liner is chock full of cooling stuff.
I saw a UTUBE of someone pulling a Lightning apart for a look.
Good luck finding someone to work on that mess down the road.
There's got to be a total retraining of mechanics to work on this stuff.
Few guys can even properly troubleshoot modern ICE and hybrids.
And all those electronic driving aids are way beyond most people
to troubleshoot. I saw a video of a guy working on an auction Caddy suv
that had had a minor front collision. Total mess. Front driving sensors
had an issue, which kept the car from going into gear! The dealer
had given up on it. I had a Dodge that had a tranny issue some years back.
The dealership made no headway at all. I went in and walked through the
factory troubleshooting chart with the mechanic. Everything he had come up with
To repair was just a wild guess. I took it home and found the issue myself.
Corrosion on a harness connector was causing issue with a sensor.
Cleaned it up, problem solved. Finding a good tech sure has gotten hard.

The CC guy claims the frunk (as the EV types are wont to call it) on the Rivian is large -- tho' not as large as is the frunk on the Ford EV pickup.

Initially launched in a few configurations of drivetrain and battery capacity, but currently only available in the “Adventure” configuration with the quad motors and a plus or minus 310 mile range (500 km), depending on wheel and tire choice. Two colors, silver and white, are offered standard; a handful of other colors are available at extra cost.

I can't wait to see how Tesla has worked around (or not) the issue for EV tractor trailers of having the battery weight eat into the load carrying capacity so much. In my opinion, between that and the distance between charges and downtime to recharge, it is going to be a disaster, just like his Twitter deal.

Perhaps outboard the batteries on hydrogen-filled dirigibles towed along behind the vehicle?

Luckily, Chevy has arranged with Lowes, Home Depot, and Lumber Liquidator that if you have plans to pick up plywood or large pieces of lumber, those retailers will honor the " 10% Off Custom Cuts" coupon for trimming your purchases to fit in the bed of your new EV !

Why do they make trucks with such a small box?

Every 4 door truck that isn't a "heavy duty" model (i.e.: 250/2500 class or bigger) has the micro bed. In my experience, most of them has been owned by one of two people.

Person 1: Crew foreman, doesn't need the big trucks, that's what the crew has, needs the interior space for people, paperwork, etc. Doesn't use the bed for much except for, say, when they come up short on supplies at a work site or something. Will use the towing capacity far more than the bed.

Person 2: Weekend warrior, wants a truck because that's what a "man" has but the wife wants something that will haul the fam too. It never really does more than commute to work to sit in a parking lot all day and the most work it does is haul plants, dirt and mulch home for the wife from The Homeless Despot. Doesn't really go off-road or at least off improved roads like campground, national or state park dirt/gravel/cinder roads. Either that or it hauls the fishing boat to the lake to get away from the wife and no way are you going to spend THAT much on a truck! Get this one it, it will work just fine. Most use the excuse that they will tow with it but that's a lot of truck for not a lot of towing capacity. These people really should have gotten a full-sized SUV instead. At least then they could fold seats down and get decent cargo capacity for the size of the vehicle. Most who get these to tow find they are fairly limited when trying to tow anything larger than, say, 6500-7000 pounds. They can't do 5th wheels easily either because of snout overhang that will impact the passenger compartment. Given the short wheel base, too, a long trailer for, like, a larger boat or a 30 foot RV trailer, the trailer will kick the truck around and make for an uncomfortable and unnerving drive.

Not to say that these are the only types that buy very short bed trucks with 4 doors, just the most common that I have encountered. There are reasonable uses for it but ever since Ford started with the Super Crew (SCrew) in 1998 or so, they have been a lifestyle vehicle or a compromise to create an image of blue collar grittiness without actually having to do any of the blue collar grittiness. Most of the owners are Suburban Commandos, Weekend Warriors or Extreme Lifestyle people who needed something bigger than a Jeep Wrangler to haul the jetskis.

That's why the electric trucks are all 4 door, micro bed trucks. They are aiming at the above "Person 2" demographic because not only does it please the "boss" at home but it comes with built in virtue signaling that not only are you a rough and tough, capable man but, you care about the environment and are forward looking and future considering and so on and so forth. So you're better than those knuckle-dragging Cromagnons you see at the "Pro" end of the Lowe's parking lot all the time. You can get away with it, though, because you will never demand more of your truck that you would from a Honda Accord wagon. The people who do complain and rail on about how terrible the electric trucks are typically are the same people who demand way more from their trucks than your average suburban home owner. You can find them at the "Pro" end of the Lowe's parking lot.

Depends. Stuff like the Explorer Sport Trac had the 4.5 foot bed and I believe the new Rangers with the 4 doors come with a 4.5 foot bed. So do the Jeep pickups. Full sized, though, the 4 doors have 5 or 5.5 foot beds unless it's something like a Super Duty then you can get 6.5 foot and 8 foot sizes.

The only way you can get a 6 or 8 foot bed on the "half ton" sized trucks is to get a standard or extended cab. No crew cab.

Not necessarily true. The tundra now comes in a 6 foot bed with the crew max cab. 6.5 foot bed is available in all cab models with the F150 (including the super crew)

The Chevy Silverado is available with three bed lengths: a long bed (8 feet, 2 inches), a standard bed (6 feet, 7 inches), and a short bed (5 feet, 10 inches). The standard bed is available with all three cab styles, the long bed is exclusive to the Regular Cab, and the short bed is limited to the Crew Cab.Aug 5, 2022

Rivian has notified customers that it's recalling 13,000 EVs — or almost all of the electric trucks and SUVs it has ever delivered — due to an issue that could render drivers unable to steer and control their vehicles. The company issued the recall after becoming aware of seven reports wherein a fastener connecting the steering knuckle to the vehicle's upper control arm "may not have been sufficiently torqued," according to Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal.
