Yo' Cheeseheads......

Sorry guyzes, this is not about sports.
Sometimes (very rarely) through life, you will run across a little slice of heaven here on Earth.....and that will remain as a "reference" throughout the rest of your life. When I was a kid, I remember eating Wisconsin spreadable cheddar cheese out of a brown crock with a lid. Much like the one pictured below.
It was so long ago that I don't really remember where they came from (What company), all I know is that I flat out LOVED the taste of this cheese. I seem to recall that it only came by once a year, like with a seasonal fund raiser for school, boy scouts or something along that line. I do remember that whenever they came up for sale, I would scrounge up all of the change and money I could find and buy all that I could afford to buy.
Then one day, without realizing it, it was gone. Never to be seen again. Maybe it was because I graduated to a grade that no longer had the fundraiser, maybe they went out of business, maybe the fundraiser moved onto selling something else. Heck, it may not have even came from a fundraiser.
Who knows?
What I would like to find out is if any of you Wisconsinites or folks from around that part of the country know where I could get the same thing. I've looked online and have only found empty, used crock pots. While I could care less about the crock pot, really, what I do care about is what was INSIDE the crock pot. Man, that was some damned tasty cheese!
I'd like to experience that little slice of heaven here on Earth again and (if only for a moment) travel back to my youth and some of the wonderful memories I had chomping it down with some Ritz crackers.
We did travel to Wisconsin a couple of years back but never really went out shopping specifically for cheese places. I regret that now.
Anybody know where I can score some?
Tom

We have one of those very same crocks hat lives under our sink. I use it to collect bacon grease.
Wisconsin Pride = Wisride (I think)
If it still exists, I suspect it is now pasteurized process cheese food (which is not cheese as we know it).

Got me curious. I think the answer is somewhere in here. The original company got sold at some point and I can't seem to find Wispride on Shoprite.com but they do have Kaukana.

The title of this thread could have been "What a crock!!!"
Try this Dairy Farms of WI site. It has list of WI Cold Pack made by/sold by. I found a listing for Wisconsin Pride but number is disconnected.
https://www.wisconsincheese.com/find-cheese/ch/17/cold-pack
"A Wisconsin tavern owner first made this Wisconsin original by blending natural cheeses without the aid of heat to provide his customers with a spreadable cheese for snacking. Since taverns were called clubs, and owners packed the cheese in crocks, this Wisconsin original became known as club or crock cheese. A variety of flavors are available."
We can include @ALL212. Aaron has family in WI and knows the State well.

I’m from WI and even bought one of those crocks not too long ago. I think I got it from a place that is close to my folks known as Wisconsin Dairy State Cheese Company. My wife loved the little crock. I just checked and it was from Pine River (noted below) so the cheese was good lol.
They also carry Pine River which is a very popular spreadable cheese and might be able to order online. Pine River has been around forever and is good.
If you ever go to WI something fun to try is cheese fudge. It blows people’s mind that it’s actually cheese and is something I always buy when I go back to see my parents. -
Hi Chris! My bad, I forgot you were from WI. Last time I saw you was at Axpona 2022. That was a nice surprise. How's things?

That probably means a trip through the Chedder Curtain… risky that… much danger when a FIB goes north…
I will send messages through the underground walleye streams and see what happens. I was planning a trip to Mineral Point to reconnoiter lodging for a later date and will keep my eyes open for this contraband you speak of.
Towards the end of the month I’ll be putting on a disguise and heading to Hayward.Aaron

Eric didn't do anything. Your moniker is very close to another forum member I met once and his name was Eric. That forum is now defunct and it's been about 14 years ago since I met him....I just thought I'd ask. What's funny is that he lives up in your neck of the woods too.
Thanks, Chris. I'll check out Pine River.

So, much to my surprise, there was a grocery store that had both Pine River and Kaukana about 8 minutes away from me. Both are good, the Kaukana is not as fluid when it comes to spreading (tends to crumble and break up up a bit) and is a tad bit sharper, albeit not by that much. I think between these two, the nod would go to Pine River.
Neither of them were as sharp as I remember coming out of the crock decades ago and not as flavorful but good nonetheless.SCompRacer wrote: »

Might better wait for colder weather or you may need to scrape the boxes interior....🤣🤣🤣 -
I did order one of those crocks today from.......dag nabbit, I forgot who now......one of those cheese joints in Wisconsin and they ship it in a box that has the insulated ice or whatever, just like Hello Fresh does. We have n yet had any issues with the boxes arriving warm, even if they sit on the front porch for an untold amount of time (until we got home that evening).
I did a blind taste test with my wife today and her observations between the two I picked up today (Pine River and Kaukana) mimicked mine with one exception. She was torn on the overall winner. She liked the sharpness of the Kaukana but liked the creaminess/texture of the Pine River.

Glad you found some!
Best of luck in your quest. I always bring back 10 pounds worth of cheese anytime I visit my folks as there is just something about WI dairy that can’t be matched.
