Anybody have any favorite music DVDs that they feel is a good buy? I don't own any as of yet but am looking to start a collection. I've heard the Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd ones are pretty good. I might just pick up Norah Jones Live in New Orleans today since it was taped here in my hometown.

Thanks for sharing.

Norah Jones Live in New Orleans is my favorite. It's got full rich sound and Norah isn't bad to look at either.

The other one I would consider is The Blue Man Group. This will put a working on your sub and has some funky rythms that will have you moving your feet.
    Front
    Polk RT800i (BI-wired)
    Rear
    Polk RT600i
    Center
    Polk CS400i (BI-wired)
    Sub
    SVS 25-31PCi (22Hz tuning port)... it's SubHuman
    Receiver
    YAMAHA RX-V1400
    TV
    Mitsubishi WT-46807 HDTV
    HD receiver

    I myself only own a couple...so I will rate

    Rush- Rush In Rio:
Not a bad disc, sound is sub par. Crowd in Rio makes this disc most enjoyable. A must have if you enjoy the band. (8)

    The Cult- Music Without Fear:
The sound on this concert footage is incredible in the DTS mode. Concert is shot in small hall in LA. Band performace is sub par. (7)

    Queensyche- Operation Mind Crime Live:
80's metal at it's best. all tracks in 5.1. Video portion is grainy.
    (6)

    Concert For George
This DVD suprised the hell out of me. I have never been a fan of George Harrison's music, so I bought this disc reluctantly.
The concert is a tribute to Harrison, shot on Nov 29th 2002 at Royal Albert Hall.
Eric Clapton is the musical director, with Jeff Lynne, Joe Brown, Billy Preston Ringo Starr to name a few.
The video AND the DTS soundtrack make this project a 10 all around!! A must have!
    (10)

    Eagles- Hell Freezes Over
Another must have for sound! Like the concert for George disc, the DTS tracks on this one are incredible!
    (10)

    More later...

I'll second the Concert for George, it's fantastic and the Eagles Hell Freezes over is state of the art DTS sound.
    Steely Dan-Two against nature
Fleetwood Mac-The Dance and they are releasing a dvd of the
    current tour on tuesday.
    Cat Stevens-Live at Majikat-just released-excellent.
Stevie Ray Vaughan-Live at el Mocombo and Austin City limits.
    Roy Orbison-Black and White night
The Who-Live at the Royal albert hall
Paul McCartney-Back in the US tour
    Elton John-One night only
    John Fogerty-Premonition
    Concert for New York city-various
    Roger Waters-In the Flesh tour

They are releasing Elvis Presley dvd's of his 68 Comeback special and the Aloha concert later this month, these dvd's should be
    great.

    Cold Play - Live 2003

Very cool... Video and sound are great, but, unfortunately, the bands' performance is not so great, but a definate must have if you like Coldplay.

I thought of a few others:
Neil Young and Crazy Horse-Rust never sleeps
    Bruce Springsteen-Live in New York
ELO-Zoom-same fantastic sound as the concert for George
    since Jeff Lynne mixed it.
    Pearl Jam-2000
    James Taylor-Live at Beacon street
    Diana Krall
    Doors-live at the Hollywood bowl
    Jimi Hendrix-live at Monterey
    Pink Floyd-live at Pompeii

Just read that they are releasing a 2 dvd set of Stevie Ray Vaughan at the Montreux jazz festival in 82 and 85.
    These shows were dynamite.

A lot of great suggestions. I'm a big fan of the Led Zeppelin DVD's, although the picture quality is not the best. Also like Hell Freezes over for sound, although they all just stand up there and do nothing. The new Paul McCartney Back in the USA is a great one, and U2 Rattle and Hum is one of my fave's too, although it's not one whole concert but footage from a few different ones interspersed with musings and tour adventures.

Picked up the Norah Jones "Live in New Orleans" and Pink Floyd "Live in Pompeii". Will be checking it out once my new surround speakers get here this week.

Best Buy has a very nice selection out in their store. Thing is input from you guys is great when the band doesn't put up a performance up to one's expectations. Good things to know.

    Definetly get the Zeppelin disc.

Sound wise the Norah Jones is fabulous.

If like acoustic female the new Jewel-Live @ Humpreys is really good and she's nice to look at also.

Again w/females the Lilith Fair DVD is very well done. The sound is top notch.

I've been a bit disappointed with the Hendrix stuff. I understand it's old. It's really unfortumate that the DVD's they decided to release are some of his more mediocre performances. Still love 'em though.

Stevie Ray Vaughn Live at the El Mocambo club is superb.

Stevie Ray Vaughn-Live from Austin Texas is very good, not as hot as the above. It's him at "Austin City Limits". The remainder of which is on the DVD in his box set.

No Doubt-Rock Steady is a must have. They are such a great band, so much energy and that comes through on the DVD.

Cheap Trick (from my hometown)-Music for Hangovers is classic Trick, the video can be subpar sometimes but it rawks. Gonna Raise Hell, as the closer, will blow the roof off!!!!!!

I was disappointed with Rush-In Rio, lousy mix and just really prefer old school Rush. The documentary, etc. was very interesting. I especially loved the little fold-up drum kit Neil practices on in the hotels. I want one of those!! Super cool.

Sarah Mclachlan-Mirrorball on DVD is fantastic if you like female vocal and the video is top notch, all around a great DVD.

Keep 'em coming guys---I need to get some new music DVD's

    Peace

    Heart - Alive in Seattle
it helps if you're a fan. DTS sound is ONLY in 5.0 not 5.1.. so no subby wubby. I"m a big fan of Heart.. and i was in the audience the night this concert was filmed for DVD release. So i'm somewhere in the audience.. see if you can spot me. ;) (check out the song Alone.... Anne's voice will give you goose bumps on this song.)

    others....

Eurythmics - Peacetour all their hits, plus Annie Lennox's great voice.

Tina Turner - Live in Amsterdam all her hits.. plus Tina's great legs !! :p

Gloria Estefan - Live in Miami her hometown.. she puts on a good show.

Santana - Supernatural Live. this is a no brainer. The man is a God. nice in DTS Smooth

Above, Mike mentioned HENDRIX LIVE IN MONTEREY. There is no such a disc but there is a Critereon edition of THE MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL that is a 3 disc set and includes one disc of Hendrix's performance. But you can not buy the Hendrix disc separately. But the whole set is a very well done DVD boxed set, I bought it about 2 years ago and still watch it regularly.

Also, unless somebody else has a different version of THE DOORS LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL, this is a stereo only disc. Of course I have had this DVD for about 5 years, so they may have remastered it in 5.1, but even the stereo only DVD is great.

You're right, I meant to say 'Jimi Plays Berkely'. Even though they didn't include the entire show, it has remastered 5:1 sound and is excellent. The video is grainy but the audio is great.

I got the latest album from Incubus the week that it came out. (A Crow Left of the Murders) It was a special release containing the CD & a bonus DVD.

The DVD has some concert footage, recording studio footage, general outtakes.... The interviews with the band are hilarious.

About 1/2 hour long, not really worth going out of your way to find, but it is pretty cool if you like Incubus.

Jimi Plays Berkeley is a very fine disc, but there is no video footage of the concert proper. There is a very nice documentary that shows some crude video of the concert, but the sound is very crude as well. The nice thing about this disc is that it contains an audio only performance of the entire concert in 5.1. Although it is dolby digital and not DTS, it is still a very nice Hendrix concert to listen to.

The DVD of HEART LIVE IN SEATTLE sounds very, very bad. I have tried to watch this concert because I am a huge Heart fan, but because the sonics are so bad I could not watch the whole disc. But it is a very bad recording, I also own the SACD of this performance and it sounds very bad as well. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the best, this disc rates about a "2".

Wow! i'd at least give it a "3"

it's not the best that's for sure. you should have heard them live.. the acoustics were horrible.. way lots of reverb. so much so that I couldn't make out some of the lyrics.

But, i got it anyway. It was/is a disapointment though.

Underworld - Everything, Everything = Lots of art, video effects, band footage, great sound

Sade - Live = Great audio, just normal concert footage

Enigma - Remember the Future = Collection of videos, but remastered for better audio. Classic IMO ;)

Ok, I watched and listened to the Heart - Live in Seattle DVD again.

I like it more now. the only drawback again.. so sub output. Otherwise the disc sound ok.. about a 5 and picture quality is better than I first thought. Now that i have a progressive scan player going into a HDTV is looks beautiful.. PQ is about a 7. some shots look near, HD quality.

Ok. that's all. i'll let this Heart thing die now. :p

OK, I gave the HEART LIVE IN SEATTLE another listen and this is my report. The picture quality is a medium quality video footage using stock videotape, no film. The picture quality can be a good "5" or borderline "6". But the sound still sucks. There is no top end, the cymbols and other high-frequency sounds are just smoothered over. There is no bass, even the synthisyzer on Crazy On You has no oomph. The bass is non existant. There is no dynamic range, the whole concert is one constant volume of mid-range clammer. There is no real music come out of the rear speakers at anytime, just a little sound effects now and then. This concert was recorded in 2002 and yet I have concert recordings from the 60's that sound way, way better than this concert. I would have to revise my original rating of "2" and say that this disc is really a "1.5".

For comparisson of sound quality, I would say that the Zepplin Disc is a borderline "10". It has real nice frequency range as well as dynamic range. For picture quality I would say that the DVD of Sheryl Crow C'MON AMERICA 2003 is solid "10". It was filmed with real cameras and real, real nice film stock, no video footage here. Also the sound quality on the Sheryl Crow disc is a nice "8" or "9".

About half of my DVD collection are concerts. Here are the ones I really like:

    Kansas - Device Voice Drum

    Transatlantic - Live in Europe

Herbie Hancock -Future 2 Future Live (Some of that is as good as it gets. Some of it is very forgettable)

Pat Metheny Group - Speaking of Now Live

Joe Satriani - Live in San Francisco

    G3 - Live in Denver

As far as Jimi Hendrix goes, I like Wild Blue Angel (live at the Isle of Wight). The video quality is good, and I like the tune selection. Yes, there are some band techical problems, but they still play well IMHO.

I also have the Nora Jones DVD. IMHO it is pretty boring. To each his/her own. Peace.

I really don't want to beat a dead horse but I would like to make one additional comment about the DVD of HEART LIVE IN SEATTLE. It was mentioned earlier that this disc is not a 5.1 but instead a 5.0 disc. This is not correct. This disc does indeed have a 5.1 mix on it done by Tim Weider. When I put the disc into my player and press play the indicator on my DAC pre/pro indicates that the digital stream contains a "3/2/1 dolby digital" mix. Another way to tell that this disc is 5.1 is by setting your sub-woofer to "auto on" and starting this disc up. The sub will automatically turn on because it detects an input signal. Although it is in fact a 5.1 mix, the "LFE" track is very weak, but it is there.
