Somehow that rubber snake thing seems... Biblical. :#

meanwhile, be glad your peckers ain't pileateds. They take their pecking quite seriously.
Here's an example, just down the hill from us. For a sense of scale, that topmost, elliptical hole is about 14 inches high -- and ca. 6 inches deep.

It is also amazing to see how fast a pileated can excavate holes like these.
They aren't the type to go after houses, fortunately.

(pileated on sumac, out in the backyard a few weeks back)

We had trouble at our house in MA with woodpeckers (downy woodpeckers, in this case) going after some of the trim boards. We replaced 'em with PVC 'boards', which did solve the problem.

(just a random downy we espied down in VA last week, for illustrative purposes only)

Those are kool woodpeckers ( pileated). Too bad they could never find their cousins down in Arkansas. Real bummer they have been erased from the earth.

    Yup, the ivory-billed woodpecker. :/

Mrs. H went lookin' for 'em in Cuba a few years back (2017, give or take) with Massachusetts Audubon.
Well, they weren't specifically looking for ivory-bills, but I am sure they wouldn't have minded stumbling across one. :#

Caught this guy in my front "yard" one day last spring.

As I approached him, he hardly cared. He stopped his pecking on the stump only long enough to give me the "evil eye," then promptly got back to business.

    He was a brazen critter!

    Cool! Great image.
That's a male - note the red streaks on the side of the head ('face') by the bill.
Also note that the red crest goes all the way down to the base of the bill.

The one in the photo I posted earlier's a female.

Note the lack of red streaks"behind" the bill (they're black on the female), and the black bit between the base of the bell and the red crest. :#

PS They are (can be) quite noisy, too! :)

    Should have been.

Actually, I was walking up the driveway with our two-years-old grandson, who was absolutely fascinated with this bird. We approached slowly, and I took several photos and a couple of videos.

I back to the woods. I hear them, but I don't see them.
No issues here. House is brick with vinyl trim.

While that may appear to be a solution upon first inspection, there is a slight difficulty
