Standard def tv

Options
It's been what, 13 or 14 years since the world went digital broadcast.
Why does catv still have a bunch of old standard def channels.
You'd think all the picture tube TVs would be dead by now. Although
I have seen a couple by the curbside recently. Give it up already.

My beef with broadcast TV/cable is the sucky sound quality.

    I second this.

Was watching some BB thru DTV, picture not the best from time to time, audio meh.

Switched over to the antenna and what a difference.

    The visual clarity is excellent.

I know the content is still not HD, but say comcast,
For instance. The first couple hundred channels are
Standard. Then they have HD and they repeat the same
Channels in HD at least two times. Sometimes three.
The old TV's have to be just about dead. So why keep
The channels alive? And why repeat everything?
That's not even including Spanish channels.

    Two things:
    1. it's a government mandate
    2. you should be able to set up your receiver to create a list you see. My dish box is that way. I only see the channels in SD that I do not get in HD.

True you could set up favorites viewing. Then the mrs would set ut back to all channel mode.
    By accident of course.

My dad stuck with black and white TV forever. He bought his first
Color TV in 1978. I remember seeing it the first time when I was
Home on leave. Add to it I didn't have a TV until 1981.
I remember seeing reruns of the shows I'd only seen in black
And white. Who new all those uniforms in star trek were that
Bright. And the wizard of oz transition to color after Dorothy
    Landed in oz?

Apparently a lot of people do. Most waste companies won't take them. Neither
Will most charities. CRTs are now considered hazardous waste.

CRT contain mercury and are considered hazardous waste. The cost of recycling is covered in CA by the fee collected on the sale of electronics with screens ($4-6 depending on the size of the screen).

Locations in CA can be found HERE if Bud is interested.

Must be similar initiatives in other states for anyone that still has one of these heavy monsters taking up space in their basement or garage. 🤷‍♂️

Here in Tennessee looks like the only option is pay to recycle it.
A whole lot of this stuff ended up in big piles in 3rd world countries.
Not much real recycling happens with CRTs. Today's tech is
    tomorrow 's trash.

I disposed of a 32" tube TV about two years ago at Best Buy. I think they charged $25.00.
I don't know if they still accept them.

My mom still has a 27" CRT and standard def service. I'd love to upgrade her, but she'd balk at the increased cost of service, and it'd be a nightmare teaching her how to use everything. Besides, she'd have no way to connect her VCR. Yes, she still tapes shows...

Better hurry. A lot of the Best Buy stores are closing. The one nearest me already did. [No tears.]

Not sure where you are, but Best Buy have been doing great in recent years (I follow their financial reports). Many thought they would be the next Sears ten years ago, but now it’s the opposite. Not always plain sailing, but steady growth nevertheless.

HA tell that to our Best Buy! They are a shell of their former self.
