Well, when I first saw the preview for Riddick, I was like "they made a sequel to that piece of **** movie Pitch Black . Why? But then I saw a very favorable review by Moriarity on Aintitcoolnews.com. I started to get a little excited about it, even though I'm not a big fan of Diesel. Now it's getting some not so favorable reviews on the same website, so who knows. Sounds like some will like it, some won't, rather than a more blanket response. I'm seeing it tonight, will let you know. With no spoilers of course.

Well, I saw Riddick tonight, and even thought this review would be better if I had some more time to think about it, my initial reaction is that I liked it. Overall it was fun, the special effects were great, and the thing that impressed me the most is that the various settings were very well used in the story. They were always incorporated into the story rather than just for show. The acting was pretty good, although I'm not a huge fan of Thandie Newton. She handled her Lady Macbeth-like role with little to no subtlety.
The sci-fi universe seems really well-thought-out, however just because it looks very well constructed doesn't necessarily mean we are any more informed about the motivations or backgrounds of many of these characters. A lot of the backstory was only hinted at, in service of a more action-oriented plot. But the action was pretty good, even though there was a lot of very frenetic camera work that at times made it hard to process what was going on.
It wasn't a great film, as most aren't, but it was a decent time at the movies, and Friday night is a high tolerance night anyway. There are some plot holes, ones you might as well not try to think about too much. However, I have read that this is the beginning of a trilogy, so maybe more will be fleshed out in the ensuing films. I liked it enough to see those when they come out. The sound at this particular theater was very good, but if you have a decent setup you could wait for DVD. I'm still thinking Spiderman 2 will be the big summer movie to beat.

    F that bald-headed, fast and furious ****.

He'll be known as a halfway decent B-movie actor IF he is lucky (and the planets align and so forth). What a putz. I **** in his general direction.

    Cheers,

I was dissappointed with it. It looked good and had good action. But alas, there was just about no plot, and the dialogue was sorry. This is just one guy's opinion. Peace.

I saw Pitch Black and had the same reaction...."Their make a sequel to that piece of **** movie!?!??!"

I think i'll give it a rental, but that's it.

On a side note....From what i've heard about Diesel, he's a real good guy. Some kid came up to him once and asked him to buy a candy bar. Vin didn't buy one, but showed him a better selling technique. After the kid tried it out on a few people Vin bought the lot of what the kid had. I think that's stand up stuff if you ask me and he went way out of his way to do that.

I don't think he's a piss poor actor either...I think he just takes some stupid roles. Just my opinion.
