What are my mod options for my SDA CRS+?

Scored a pair of these a few months back. Pin/blade with original sl2000 tweeters. I read on here about the RDO tweeter upgrade and tried to find some, but back in like October when I called Polk they said they wouldn’t have any til like January. Then I saw how (sorry if I butcher this) the RDO198 tweeter can be used with a crossover mod. Then I noticed there’s SO MUCH info on this forum, some of it outdated and 404ing, and I got overwhelmed so I come with this question.

What can I do to get the best out of these cabs? I love them so far

A couple of changes to my original info. Remove the 750pF Silver Mica and do NOT replace with anything.
    Use two 20uF instead of a 10 and 30 for the 40uF.

Tweeters RDO 198’s, Upgrade the crossovers are two most important IMO.

Add some black hole 5, dynamat the baskets, binding posts, and internal wiring..

    Building or finding a dreadnought..

That would be my list, if you have the funds to do all of it at one time, than balls out!! 😃

I really wish gimpods boards were still available, they made modding the crossovers like doing paint by numbers…

Try Clarity Cap 12uf for the tweeter circuits and Daytons for the 20 and 40uf.

I’m sure! My budget’s just tight - I’m about to move into a new home. Might just buy a pair of caps a month at a time then do the mod once I have them all.

    Good point.

If I were to do the Sonicap 5.8s and 12s, could I do cheaper Daytons for the 20s and just upgrade to Sonicap later? I have a powered sub and I'm really after this upgrade for the tweeter above all else

Sorry, can’t seem to find schematics. Which caps are the bypass caps?
  • Uh oh.

This whole time I swore I had the late 80s pin/blade cabs but I double checked before ordering the RD0198s aaaaaand looks like mine are the 1986 blade/blade model with the single vertical tweeter. Thanks 2021 for making me lose my mind.

SO, anyway, looks like the 4.1TL mod is out without finding the proper crossovers and drivers. Could I even find these components anywhere? Is there anything else I can upgrade other than change the existing caps? I can't find the RD0194 tweeters anywhere either - backordered until feb/march.

    Help!

Well did you look at the XO board? Is it one board or two?
You could still have a B/b socket and a one board XO.
Worth a look to double check.

Mine were the 86 version as well, I had the MW6511’s in my stash, I purchased gimpods boards, RDO-198’s, and all of the other goodies to go with them, Jesse happened to have the passives SW102’s, and off I went..

IMO, you would be better off just upgrading them with the 194’s when available, and the crossovers. Finding parts for these seem to be getting harder and harder to get the last few years, so taking them to the later model would be a challenge. These speakers are great the way they are anyways..

Fair. Guess I’ll cross my fingers that I can find some 194s in a few months and maybe just recap the existing crossovers in the meantime.

Per westmassguy and a few others, you can do the TL mod on your 86, crs+, blade/blade, it's just not a sanctioned mod. Have I done it, nope, but I'm saving up parts to start. Its waaaaay more expensive to do because of the two boards, but one can do it in waves.

    This comment resembles the
    spam link removed
approach in the world of audio equipment upgrades. The commenter purchased speakers and heard about an RDO tweeter upgrade but faced difficulties sourcing it. They explored an alternative involving the RDO198 tweeter with a crossover mod but found the forum overwhelming due to outdated information. They seek help from forum members to simplify the upgrade process, much like how paint by numbers simplifies painting for beginners.

You can modify the 3rd generation CRS+ and SDA 2As to accept the RD-0198. Just follow the high pass schematic section for the SDA CRS+ 1990 SL3000 Mod. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
