Why does the Signa S2 need an HDMI connection in addition to optical?

If I'm going to connect the Signa S2 to my TV via an optical cable, why do I still need an HDMI connection as documented in the manual? What capabilities am I getting from that?

I believe an HDMI ARC connection between TV and soundbar allows a two-way communication between them. Any remote that can operate the TV will also operate the soundbar.

So what if I don't have a free HDMI port, but can run optical. What do I lose? You're saying no volume information goes across optical?

I believe the only difficulty will be that only the supplied remote will operate the soundbar.

but my supplied remote doesn't work. None of the buttons produces response

I only have one HDMI arc and I don’t believe regular hdmi carries audio
